"Nai noun aayi hoyi ay kar'ch. Tenu sharam nai aandi?" My precious Ammi started the moment I entered their hous.
*"Our new daughter-in-law has just come home. Aren't you ashamed?"
"Mere nal aayi hai o, Ammi. Menu kais gal di sharam?" I grinned.
*"She came along with me. Why should I be ashamed?"
My mother shook her head in disapproval. "You are a workaholic. And after work, you just have to go out for a meal with Rohaan and your friends."
In the doorway, Shay appeared, a small smile on her face. She wore a lime green Anarkali dress, with green chudidar and a plain sheer dupatta. "It's okay, Aunty. Today he got delayed because I asked him to pick up some items from the supermarket."
Ammi turned to face her, her demeanour instantly changing to a warm, loving one. "Oh, is that right, beta? Well, okay then. He should be helping you out with whatever you need." She patted Shay's shoulder before walking out of the room... but not before tossing a glare at me.
Shay walked over to me. "Now I'm lying to my mother-in-law for you, husband, to save you. You owe me big time."
I gave her a smile. "I owe you one, Shay."
"I know what you can do for me." She smirked.
"I'm screwed, aren't I?"
"A big tough policeman scared of a this sweet, innocent lady." She feigned innocence.
I laughed. "You're still a biwi."
"Good answer." She also laughed. "Anyway, what I need from you, is to use your police car to get me out of bad traffic. Turn on the siren, speed past, and I'll tailgate you."
"What?" I looked at her in disbelief.
She laughed again. "Just kidding. You owe me one. That's enough for now."
"I am screwed." I groaned.
Heading deeper into the house, I heard the loud arguments of political analysists discussing Pakistani politics on a news channel. I smiled to myself. My Baba was obsessed with Pakistani politics, like countless other Pakistani people of his generation. "Assalam Alaikum, Baba."
He looked up. His annoyed frown was replaced by a small smile, visible even under his thick grey moustache. "Walaikum Assalam! How was work? Any interesting cases to discuss?" My father took great and genuine interest in my work.
"Just the ongoing murder investigation."
"It's the sign of end times, all this unlawful death and destruction." Baba sighed. "May Allah protect us from Dajjal. Ameen."
