Yamna
Mama cried herself to sleep.
I could hear her sniffing when she thought that I was asleep.
We were in a single twin bed room of a Travelodge by some motorway services. Mama said she'd figure out what to do next in the morning.
I know that even though she was mad at Papa, she was hurting after leaving home. I knew Papa was also hurting, feeling absolutely terrible about everything. I myself was plagued with guilt that a huge reason of this argument was a concern for my future.
"Why don't we just go to Dado's?" I'd asked in the car after we had left home.
"No matter what, I don't want your Papa to look bad, even in front of his own family." This is what she had replied.
Somehow, Mama had managed to find a place with a twenty-four/seven check-in, due to its proximity with a major motorway, I suppose. It was too quiet here. I could only hear the occasional sound of cars passing by on the motorway nearby.
I tossed and turned. It was too hot as well, with no air-conditioning or even a fan.
But worse were the worries swimming around in my mind: would my parents get divorced over this? Would my family break apart?
Feeling restless, I got up and went to sit on the chair by the desk. My stomach hurt a little from the anxiety. I felt lost, not knowing what to do.
Ya Allah, please keep my family together. Ameen.

WARNING: GRUESOME CRIME SCENE DEPICTED/DESCRIBED
Rohaan
It was just before Fajr as I approached the small little trembling boy who was being looked after by paramedics. I crouched down on the ground in front of him. "Hey, buddy. I'm Rohaan. What's your name?"
He looked at me with tear-filled eyes. "Leo."
"Leo, how old are you?" I asked.
"Five."
"Awesome. That's such a super cool age." I smiled. "You are finally old enough to play with some of the coolest toys." I paused. "Leo, where are your Mum and Dad?"
With a shaking finger, the little boy pointed towards the house. "Mummy won't wake up. I don't know where Daddy is."
This little guy had called 999 because his mother wouldn't wake up. According to the paramedics, who had arrived first, he had been sitting on the threshold with the front door opened when they'd arrived. He was scared, crying and shaking badly.
