Rohaan

I had decided to stay one night at my dadiyal, before leaving for work early in the morning.

After Fajr, I came downstairs to get water when I saw the patio deck lights on. Frowning, I headed towards the window and peeked out. I saw Boss Woman standing by the railing, her back to me, with a shawl draped around her.

I headed out. "I know peace left your life the day I was born. Are you hoping to find it in the early morning sky?" I looked at her face and saw tears on her cheek. "Mama, what's wrong?" I wrapped my arm around her shoulders.

"I don't usually complain about him, but your father scared me." She whispered, leaning against me. "My head has been constantly hurting just thinking about..." Her voice broke.

"Hmmm." I tried to keep the tone light. "Never had to interrogate my own father for a crime before, but I suppose there's always a first time. First time criminal, and such a serious crime: scaring my Boss Woman."

She smiled weakly. "I cannot imagine life without him, and he's making me picture it."

I frowned. "What?"

"He loves and adores you kids, but his concern is that if you guys split up, what's going to happen with me if...?" She started sobbing, lightly.

I tightened my arm around her. "Mama, first and foremost, may Allah give both of you long and healthy lives. Ameen. Second, although I know that all my siblings will take good care of both you and Papa, I can only speak on my own behalf when I say that you and Papa have nothing to worry about as long as I'm around. I promise, I'll take excellent care of you both, In Sha Allah."

"Rohaan." She looked up at me with a sad smile and tears in her eyes.

"I will speak to him. I'll tell him not to say such things to you again." I smiled back at her. "Now, come on. Go back to sleep. Your stressing days are long over. It's time for you to rest and relax."

"I was wrong." She said.

"Wow, this an epic confession." I grinned. "What were you wrong about, Boss Woman?"

"I used to say that nobody knew who you've gone after, but day by day I realise that you are exactly like Rehan."

"Nah, Mama. He's Mr Responsible who can do no wrong, Ma Sha Allah. And I'm the epic rebel, who's always wrong."

She slid her arm through mine. "Don't be so sure about that, honey. He's had his moments..."

"Ooh, am I going to hear juicy secrets about the irresponsible behaviour of Mr Responsible?"

"Absolutely...not. Spouses keep each other's secrets." She winked at me. "But know that you two are more alike than you realise."

FLASHBACK

Anabia

I arrived home after a late shift to utter chaos.

"What in the world is going on here?" I asked when I walked into Rohaan and Arsal's room.

There was water flooding out of the bathroom, and all four kids of mine were playing in it, happily splashing about. Two and three-year-old Arsal and Rohaan, and six-year-old Hoor and Haya.
