Yamna
"Fire." I gasped out on the phone to Rohaan, as flames started to lick the area where the flammable liquid had been poured...blocking my only exit. I dropped the phone, terrified.
I was in so much shock that my mind seemed to have shut down completely.
And suddenly, I got flashbacks. In Primary and Secondary schools, we used to have firefighters and police officers come in for presentations on safety. I tried to recall the fire safety.
There are three things required for a fire: heat, oxygen and fuel. Kill one, and the fire dies.
Water quenches the heat.
Water.
My gaze went to the kitchen doorway that was still accessible. I need to save myself. Nobody can save you immediately but yourself, as you're the only one around. I dashed towards the kitchen.
I have to save myself. Allah, let my efforts succeed.
With a fatal deadline looming over my head, I looked through the kitchen cupboards until I found the large tub that Mama used to knead flour into dough for roti or parathas. I could smell the smoke and my hands trembled as I filled it up with water at the kitchen sink.

"Papa, I need your car key." I ran into the living room, where my parents were sitting and talking.
"What's wrong?!" Mama looked alarmed.
"Yamna's at Chachu's flat. There's a fire..." I replied impatiently. "Papa, key, please."
"Ya Allah Khair!" Mama placed a hand over her chest, as Papa pointed towards the coffee table where I saw his car key.
"Why was Yamna at the flat?!" Chachu appeared in the doorway, having clearly overhead.
"I'll come with you, Rohaan." Papa stood up.
"No, it's not safe." I ran out before anyone else could protest. Truth be told, I didn't have any time to waste on idle chatter anyway. I had to get to Yamna. Her call had ended abruptly, and the worst thoughts were coming to my mind.
Sweet, innocent Yamna. She must be terrified. Ya Allah, keep her safe. Ameen. I prayed silently as I drove.

Yamna
I groaned as I lifted the heavy tub full of water and carried it out to the hallway. The flames had started to lick the wooden front door, which had obviously been splattered by the petrol or whatever that had been thrown. "Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem."
*Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem: "In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful."
I threw the water onto the flames.
Water kills the heat. One element lost, meaning the fire is lost. There are exceptions to the rule, because some types of fire should not be attempted to be extinguish using water, for example electrical fires.
I blinked as the flames started to decreased. I ran back to get more water, and brought it out again. As I poured water this time, the door burst open and I stumbled back, startled.
