Rohaan

The past year had flown by, and now we were celebrating the first birthday of my daughter, Rabiya Rohaan Tariq.

Golden and clear balloons with golden confetti inside decorated the marquee that had been set up in the back garden of the Tariq family home. Round tables were placed with golden ribbons tied to the backs of the chairs.

Rabiya had surprised us all. She had shown blatantly dislike recently in the colours that were stereotypically considered 'feminine colours', and preferred darker colours... like black and dark blue. However, her love for soft toys was as strong as her mother's was. She was a perfect combination of me and Yamna.

At eleven months, my daughter had started running around, Ma Sha Allah, often putting our hearts in our throats. She was a liability to herself, and we were often concerned that she was going to end up hurting herself with her cheekiness.

Currently, she was in Papa's arms, her small hands on his shoulders as she tilted her head back to stare up at the balloons that decorated the top of the marquee as well. Wearing a sequinned golden dress, complete with a headband with a bow, she looked truly like a beautiful little princess. Ma Sha Allah.

"Papa!" Seeing me, Biya reached out an arm towards me, smiling.

Dressed in an all black suit, including a black button-down-shirt, I approached. "There's my birthday girl."

"Baba." Biya pointed towards Papa, as if telling me who he was.

"Yes, sweetheart. He's your Baba." I ran a hand over the back of her head.

"Rohaan, the guests are arriving. Come." Mama walked over to us, dressed in her black sari with a golden border.

Yamna and I had chosen the outfits for our parents ourselves, wanting to give them a special treat in celebration of the first birthday of their granddaughter. Papa also wore a black suit, but his shirt was white. Yasin Chachu had a matching suit, while Saba Chachi had a black lace sari, with a heavy golden necklace to complete the general colour theme.
