On Monday, work resumed as normal. Weekend over, and I was sitting in my cubicle, looking through my emails. There wasn't a new manuscript to go over, so I grabbed my notebook from my bag and opened it.

Someone suddenly slammed a thick manuscript onto my desk, making me jump. I looked up, startled.

"Take it. Emily wants you to look over this." Sharon, the middle-aged bully, told me grumpily, clearly displeased about having to do this task for her boss.

"Thanks." I tried to remain civilised, as I had been trying since I started this job.

But some people just don't know how to behave professionally... or like decent humans. She made a face at me, grumbling under her breath.

"You're my mother's age. What's wrong with you?" I blurted out.

She reached out towards me, as if she was about to angrily grab my arm.

"You lay a finger on me, and I will report you." I warned her. "Stay within your limits."

"How did a kitten learn to roar?" Jyoti appeared behind Sharon.

Rolling my eyes, I started to sit down, but Sharon suddenly pulled the chair back, almost causing me to fall down. Luckily, I grabbed onto the desk and steadied myself, my heart pounding hard in my chest. For a few moments, I felt nothing but pure terror as I thought about what could have happened if I had fallen. I whirled around, eyes filled with tears. "Forget your daughter Bethany, even you people don't deserve to be employed here. Now excuse me, and let me do my work because that's why mature adults come to the office." I sat down and opened the first page of the manuscript.

They walked away, muttering seriously nasty things about me, and how undeserving I was of this job.

I sighed, losing all focus. I tried to ignore them, as I had been so far, but their words kept bothering me. I felt stressed coming to work, and stress was something that I couldn't afford.

I grabbed my phone.

<Yamna: People are drama.>

The reply was immediate.

<Shay: I know. But why are you saying it?>

<Yamna: People my Mama's age are bullying me.>

<Shay: Still? 😳 My God, they need to get over it!>
<Shay: Let's meet up after you finish work. We'll go and get something to eat. I'll call Amira too.>

<Yamna: That sounds great. 🙂>

"What the actual fudge cake?" Amira looked at me in disbelief.

"All because one lady wanted her daughter to get the job." Shay rolled her eyes.

"People have saas-bahu dramas. You have multiple work sasses instead, it seems." Amira shook her head.

I laughed at that.

The three of us were eating in a café close to my work. I was having a lemonade with my panini, while the two girls chose coffee with their food.

It was good to be able to actually vent to someone other than Rohaan. As much as I adored him, and as much as I could confide in him regarding everything, it was nice to have female friends to talk to as well.
