-the day after Christmas-

(Helena perspective)

We sat in the Gaunt family's living room, enjoying hot sandwiches for lunch. It was the last day before school resumed, and our suitcases were already packed by the front door.

Outside, the weather was gray and cold no rain, but thick, dark clouds hung overhead.

That morning, I had been in the backyard with Marelie and Marcus, practicing my Ancient Magic. Each day I gained a better understanding of how it worked, but today was special. Today, I was learning how to control it without relying on intense emotion how to channel it calmly, with focus.

The night before, after visiting Anne for Christmas, Marelie and I flew to Hogsmeade on Athena to pick up some new clothes and shoes. Meanwhile, Ominis had stayed home, practicing piano and beginning to pack our bags. He always took packing seriously he liked to start early so he could think things over, making sure nothing was forgotten. I, on the other hand, left everything until the last minute. I ended up packing that very morning with magic, of course.

Ominis's old soul found peace in organization. I didn't mind it saved me some work. But I was definitely curious to see which clothes he had picked out for me to wear during our free time, outside of school.

And today, finally, was the day we would tell his parents about us.

Flood, the Gaunt family's house elf, entered the room quietly and leaned toward Marcus, whispering something in his ear. I couldn't hear a word, but I watched closely. Marcus, who had been relaxed and reading the paper, suddenly tensed. His face turned stern. Without a word, he stood, tossed the newspaper to the floor, and walked to the door with his wand in hand. Marelie followed close behind.

"What is it, dear? What's going on?" she asked, concerned.

Ominis turned to me.
"We have uninvited guests at the gate. Father's taking care of it."

I walked over to the window to see who had come to the manor unannounced.

A lone figure stood just beyond the gate, dressed in a long black coat and hood. The person didn't move.

(Marcus's Perspective)

Intruders on my property? I was furious. Wand in hand, I stormed out the front door and down the stone steps, determined to defend my home and my family, no matter the cost.

"WHO ARE YOU, AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING AT MY GATE?" I shouted.

The figure made no sound. He simply raised both hands gloved in black leather. He wore high boots suited for winter weather.

"I ASK AGAIN, identify yourself!"

The figure opened his coat and reached into the inside pocket.

"I'M WARNING YOU, DON'T DO ANYTHING STUPID!" I called out firmly.

Behind me, I heard footsteps approach. Marelie, Helena, and Ominis had joined me outside, all of them tense and ready for a fight.

The hooded figure lifted his head, meeting my eyes. I didn't hesitate.

"DESCENDO!"

The stranger was thrown back by the spell, crashing to the ground. As he fell, something flew from his coat a letter. His hood slipped off, revealing a young man with dark hair.

"EVAN!" Helena shouted, stepping in front of me with her arms outstretched.
"Stop! He's not an intruder! That's Evan he lives with my family. Please don't hurt him!"

Ominis growled and lowered his wand.
"What the hell is he doing here? He's not coming inside."

Helena walked up to the gate, unlocked it using the key she'd received from Flood as a Christmas gift, and offered Evan her hand. She pulled him to his feet, despite being much smaller than him.
