(Helena perspective)

The next morning, I woke in Ominis's bed. His side was still untouched. The blankets undisturbed, the pillow cold. His clothes were still neatly folded in the wardrobe, as if he'd never left.

I slipped into a long black dress with sleeves down to my wrists and laced up my black boots. Then I made my way down to the basement. It was the last morning before we were due to return to Hogwarts. Everything was packed and ready to go.

As I descended the final steps, I was suddenly yanked into the bar and shoved against the wall. I opened my mouth to scream, but a hand covered it quickly. I struggled for a moment until I locked eyes with Evan.

His expression was full of panic and urgency. He looked around to make sure we were alone, then whispered.

"Helena, listen.. last night was a mistake. What happened shouldn't have, but it's too late to undo it now. I'm not sorry... but I know we crossed a line, and I don't want to tempt fate again. It would be better if we didn't see each other for a while. Let's just keep in touch by owl."

I mumbled something behind his hand. "Mmmppf!"

"What?" he whispered, pulling his hand away.

"You're right," I said.

He exhaled with relief, eyes still darting nervously.

"Have you seen Ominis yet? Are you... going to tell him?"

I bit my lip, hesitant. "No. I'm worried. He still hasn't come home... and I'll tell him when I'm ready."

Evan nodded slowly, understanding in his eyes.

"I get that. And... for what it's worth, last night was still one of the best evenings I've had in a long time. Thank you—for the conversations, the memories."

I tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear, cheeks flushing.

"Yeah, even when you—uh..."

Evan smirked. "Yeah, I know what you're thinking. It was nice."

"But we won't do it again, right?"

"Nope. Not again," he replied with a grin.

We walked together to the dining room for breakfast. Marelie was seated at the table, but Marcus and Ominis were nowhere to be found.

"Good morning, Marelie. Sleep well?" Evan asked, trying to sound cheerful.

She set her teacup down, her face tense.

"Not really. Marcus stormed out in the middle of the night, furious. When he realized Ominis hadn't come home. He went looking for him. I haven't heard anything since."

I reached across the table and squeezed her hand. "They'll come back soon. I believe that."

We ate breakfast and had coffee, talking about Hogwarts and my upcoming classes. My birthday was nearing, and I couldn't wait to see my friends again. Marelie had just begun to share stories from her last year at Hogwarts when a loud bang echoed from outside.

We jumped up and ran for the door.

Ominis was lying atop a pile of broken crates, bruised and battered. Marcus stood behind him, wand in hand.

"Ominis?" Marelie gasped, rushing to her son.

But as she reached for him, she recoiled in horror, stepping back in shock.

"Marcus, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!"

I pushed past Evan to get a better look.

Ominis was on his feet, barely. His face was bloodied, and his eyes glowed faint green.
