Fate is a funny thing, you know?

Some people believe in fate, that the things happening in your life are meant to happen for some reason. You don't really believe in it and you think that things are just either bad luck or good luck. To you, nothing about fate makes sense. There is just no such thing as a supernatural power that's controlling your life.

You know that seeing Akaashi and Bokuto here is just one of those bad luck moments that just randomly happen to you because life seems to hate you. This is just one of those things that just happen to you because your life seems to think that things need to go wrong.

Sometimes you feel like you're the main character in some sort of story.

Yeah, it's just bad luck.

Because fate doesn't exist.

And you were right. Things don't just happen, because this was all planned. Haruko already talked to Bokuto before you were even at the mall. Haru and Bokuto already told each other that they were in the mall since Bokuto asked if you guys would come since he was around.

Those pieces of shit made this happen, meaning that your life not only makes you want to suffer, but your friends seem to want to do the same thing.

"Another caramel macchiato?"

You stop your cursing in yourself as you look up and thank the guy from before as he gives you the caramel macchiato.

It's your favourite drink back with you again.

"Thank you. Actually, can you give us four muffins to go with these? Two chocolate muffins and two vanilla muffins. The guy with the freckles is paying!"

Haruko widens his eyes, "I'm not–"

"Oh, don't listen to him! He will. Thank you."

The waiter nods and is gone again.

"Riley, that was mean."

You shrug and ignore the guy that betrayed you. He frowns at your behaviour but shrugs it off. It's whatever.

You turn your head back to Akaashi so you can talk to him. You thought it was going to be weird to see him again, but it's actually pretty nice. You missed him and Bokuto a whole lot and you're happy that you got to see them. It's good running into them since they're already leaving tomorrow.

So even though Haru was the one that arranged all of this, it is still fun. Apparently Haru and Bokuto thought it would be better to face each other before nationals than at nationals. And maybe they are right.

Maybe you're somewhat okay with it... Maybe they had a good point. You weren't feeling your best, but now you feel okay. Maybe you just needed to see your friends from vacation, even the one who you confessed to.

"Have you guys been up to anything the past weeks?" Haruko asks the two guys after a small silence, which happened because Haruko was mumbling about the four muffins he's paying for. (Smh Haruko it ain't even that bad).

Bokuto nods as answer. "Yeah! We had a fun training with other teams a couple weeks back, it was pretty cool. We had a lot of new people to play with! One dude was really small but funny! He can jump really high, it was crazy to see. And there was a tall guy with glasses that Kuroo and I practiced with!"

Haruko smiles, "That sounds like fun! Did you learn anything from it? Riley, I think you should arrange something like that for Inarizaki! Bokuto and Akaashi had fun, so maybe your team will learn something from it and have fun too."

"Bokuto had fun, yes. It was alright," Akaashi says. "We did learn something from it, so it wasn't a waste of time. We might face them at nationals, so it was good to scout the new teams out. But the other Tokyo teams however, we already know how they play. We have lots of practice matches with them anyway."

Haruko nods, "That's cool! See, Riles, why don't you arrange something like that too?"

You pout at Haruko's words. "I don't like arranging things as the manager. Plus, I think this is more of a coach thing to take care of."

"Have you found a new one yet?"

Aaaand Bokuto's words cut like knives being thrown at you because dammit you damn know you have to look for another one.

"No..." you mumble, sighing. "I um... I kinda forgot to look for one the past weeks. So far no one wants to do it and I don't blame them."

"Me neither. I wouldn't take on that job either. It seems so boring to me, I don't even know what you do half of the time."

You shrug, "I don't know either. I guess makeing posters or something, or arranging things. I also talk to the coach sometimes and the team members. I don't even know it myself. I'm just winging it."

"So... No new one?"

"Bokuto, don't remind me!"

You sigh and lay your head down on the table as you look at the coffee in front of you.

"I might just have to stay for another year, since I can't tell someone how it's done in a few weeks. And the twins and Suna like me there. I guess it's kinda fun to be around them with volleyball... So maybe I should just ask people to join me instead of having them take the job over from me?" you think out loud, nodding to yourself.

Akaashi smiles at you, "That sounds like a good idea. We have two managers as well and they're great."

"I love Yukie and Kaori!" Bokuto says excitedly. His eyes get wider and he seems even more exited when he sees the waiter with the muffins.

Bokuto takes a vanilla one and so does Haruko. You and Akaashi take the chocolate ones.

When you reach for yours, Akaashi's hand moves to the same one. You blush as your hands bump into each other.

"Oh, I'm sorry. You can take that one."

He reaches for the second one, but you obviously had the same idea and you're reaching to the other muffin too.

"Oh, um–"

Bokuto starts to laugh and takes both muffins to place them in front of you and Akaashi.

"There you go, dummies! Enjoy the muffin!"

Yeah, that was awkward.

And not only because your and Akaashi's hands touched, it was more due to the fact that the waiter was standing there like 🧍🏼‍♂️.

You awkwardly grab your muffin and take a bite, the chocolate of the muffin all spreading around your mouth. Seriously, now you have cake smeared all over your face? With just one bite? Can't life be nice to you for once?

Akaashi looks at you and chuckles softly. "Riles, you..." he pauses for a bit and smiles. "You got something on your face."

You turn even more red and wipe your face with a napkin that Akaashi was holding out for you. "Right, that was stupid. Aha, it's always those chocolate muffins eh?"

He nods a little and smiles even wider. "Of course."

Haruko and Bokuto smirk to one another and give each other a high five without you and Akaashi noticing, since you're too embarrassed to notice and Akaashi is too caught up in your eyes.

"Mission accomplished," they both mouth to each other before they dig into their coffee and muffin.

Meanwhile you and Akaashi are the biggest messes you have ever been.
