I fried some eggs before Caleb woke up. He held me close the entire night that I had to slip slowly and quietly away from his grasp.
He appeared at the doorway and he smiled at me.
"Where's you get eggs from?" He asked.
"I'm a fucking ninja, Caleb." He chuckled and sat down in front of me.
"After Mr. Campbell said we had to possibly run, I kept some extra stuff in the car in case of an emergency like this." I smiled.
"You're brilliant."
I chuckled. "I'm just prepared. I always had the imagination I'd be on the run. Possibly from my father so he won't find me. But it's worse now. Even the head of department is rejecting my plea. Can't even trust anyone down there." I sighed.
I poured the eggs into the plate and I handed it to him.
"I'm never gonna forgive them for what they did to Elora. For taking her so easily. I did all I could to give her a safe home and keep her away from what might possibly rip her tiny little heart out." I sat down and I shook my head.
"She's never gonna forgive me for letting her go either."
"Cora, it's not your fault. You gotta stop taking the blame. You gave her a happy life. And once you get her back, you're gonna get to do all those things."
I looked at him and I nodded. "I'm just disappointed in myself for letting it happen. I could've changed the name to mine as her legal guardian but they had to show up on my birthday."
"Do you have any idea where she could be?"
I shook my head.
"No. I don't know. But I bet they moved towns away from me. Possibly to start a family of some kind and make people fall in love with them." I rolled my eyes.
He reached out for my hand and frowned.
"Let's just think about how to go from here, Coco."
"Yeah, I'm just waiting for the money. Patty was able to get buyers and he said the money would be ready by tomorrow. I'm just waiting for it."
"Well, I have a few bucks. I sold my house yesterday while you were gone with Kelsie. It's good enough for both of us."
I smiled and squeezed his hand.
"I don't know why you wanna run, Caleb. What are you running from?"
He frowned.
"Everything. That house. That town. That school. My dad and mom would constantly fight on and on and I'd just hide in my room, blocking out the sounds.
The bad reputation of being a playboy...it's not something I like. So..I know I fucked a couple girls but it's not who I really am. I just wanna live my life as a teenage kid."
"So...why didn't you wanna tell Lee about us?"
"He'd taunt me. He'd possibly hurt you again and me. There would be fights. Because I know he loves you too."
I rubbed my forehead and I leaned on my hand. "Caleb, if he hurts me I would so easily beat his ass and knock him to the ground. But he can't be that. He's our friend."
"No. He's not. He knows I love you. So he wanted to get you first." "Get me first?" I asked, raising my eyebrows.
He nodded. "It's all been a competition with him. I've been in love with you since the 3rd grade. He knew about it when we were in middle school and he's been taunting me with it. And he told me he'd get you first."
