The next morning I figured I'd make breakfast for the little kiddo after the ridiculous incident the previous day.
No, it wasn't anything fancy. I just made toast and I called her down. She toppled down the stairs and I gasped when I heard a thud. I ran to the bottom of the stairs to see her sitting flat on her bum.
"Kid, you okay?" I asked, kneeling beside her. "Yeah, I tripped. I'm okay." "Damn you're brave. If it was me I'd cry." I joked. She giggled. "I'm stronger than you." "No doubt about that. Come on. We're gonna be late."
I pulled her up and we sat at the table.
"Is that bully still gonna bother you?"
"No, he stayed away. After that atomic wedgie, he never talked to me again." I chuckled. "Thank God. Or else I'd have to teach him a lesson."
"No need for that. You've done so much for me. I can handle this on my own." "Sure?" I raised my eyebrow. "I'm sure!"
"Alright. I won't pressure you. But if you need anything I'm here you know that, kiddo." "I know."
"Alright. We gotta hurry."
"Your phone is buzzing." She said. "Huh?" I looked down and dug into my pocket. "I'm deaf now, kid." She giggled. I heard. I didn't wanna give it attention.
I checked out who called me. It was Caleb.
"Hey, can you pick me up? My ride broke down and Liam can't come because apparently he's already in school."
"Sure. I'm on my way."
I hung up and I smiled at her. "Come on. We gotta pick up the bully, kid." She grinned and followed me out of the house.
I got into the car and I started it.
"You're lucky Kelsie isn't here. She'd never let you have the front seat." I looked at her. "She gives me a chance." "That's rare."
She shrugged and pulled her seat belt. "Well, I'll give her a wedgie then." "Tell me beforehand so I can record it."
We laughed together and I pulled away from the driveway.
"Did you hear how long daddy was gonna be gone?"
"No. I didn't. But I don't think it matters, kid. The next time I see him and if he hurts us I kill him."
"Would you really kill him?"
"Let me ask you a question, kid. If you saw him with a knife, ready to kill me and I also had a knife, who would you rather see die?"
"Him."
"Exactly. Listen kid. I'm not promoting the act of violence. But I need to protect myself and you importantly. And if I have to do what I can to do that, I won't hesitate one bit."
"What about mom?"
"She's a low life hag. I don't wanna bring down your mood and I feel like you're not old enough to know the truth kid-"
"I am old enough. I've been through so much I think whatever you tell me it won't scare me."
I glanced at her for a second and she locked eyes with me. I looked back at the road and I gripped the wheel tight.
"Mom and dad left us with granny after you were born. But when you were 5 I think you remember them coming after granny died? They had no choice, kid. They abandoned us."
She stayed silent. "Don't say I didn't warn you."
"Did he hit you before I was born?"
I clenched my jaw and I kept quiet. "Cora?"
