~Alex's POV~
I pick up a box and take a few steps down the corridor. The label "3-18-25" catches my attention instantly. Gripping the knob, I turn it gently and peek my head inside.
On the bed with his back toward me, Jade's sitting up and staring out of the window, mumbling to herself with occasional sniffles. I'm now realizing how long her hair is. It's down her back and it's resting on the sheets far enough to almost reach the edge of the bed. I close the door silently behind me, but the click of the door grabs Jade's attention. She peeks over her shoulder, and her hair follows.
Her eyes water instantly and she asks in a wobbly voice, "W-What are you... Doing here?"
"I have something for you," I reply, holding the box up slightly. I walk over to her bedside and place the container on the nightstand. She turns and inspects the contents through the lid. Jade picks it up, kicks her feet over the edge of the bed, and places the container on her lap.
Tears start rushing from her eyes unexpectedly accompanied by small sobs. "You... How'd you know I liked this? How'd y-you remember?"
"I-I'm an observant person," I stutter, fidgeting with my hands. I have no idea what to do at this moment since I don't think I'm the best at comforting. "And with how it must be with this sickness, I thought maybe a nice snack could bring... Some kind of happiness to it."
"I'm sorry! I d-don't want to make this awkward!... I can't stop and my eyes are burning," Jade whines, wiping her eyes desperately.
I shake my head and sit beside her. If everyone out there thinks I'm infected, I might as well fulfill the prophecy. Internally, I think about everything I'm going to say before it comes out.
I clear my throat, "Ahem, you're not making this awkward. You don't have a choice in your behavior right now, okay? This disease is confusing and fast spreading... But, it'll all get better soon. We're trying to find a solution to it without having to murder anyone. You're going to be okay."
"Y-You're too sweet..." She takes the snack from the container and opens the packaging.
I nod and stay with Jade for some time. I specifically remember her saying that she didn't like being alone, so I didn't want to leave her immediately. After some time, I stand on the bed. I have to give the other patients their food and make sure that they get enough to eat, too.
She takes another bite of her food. "... Do you have to go?"
"I'm sorry," I utter, grabbing the doorknob. "I've gotta make sure the others get to eat, too. But, I'll try and come back, okay?"
Jade nods. I can see her eyes water, but she quickly puts food in her mouth to stop the sobs from following. I can't help but feel bad as I leave the room and close the door behind me. I go back to the table, pick up another container, and start heading toward the end of the hall.
I glance up at the door's label and it reads: "19-12-5-5-16-25". I twist the knob, silently open the door, and peek into the room. As I had anticipated, Zach's completely knocked out on the bed, snoring obnoxiously. I'm not sure if that's a symptom of the disease or he just... Does that?
Anyway, I go up to the nightstand and place the container down. I notice a paper on the nightstand that's blank, so I decide to ignore it. My hold moves from the container and to Zach's shoulders. I shake him a couple of times until he shows signs of waking up. Proudly, I open the container and stand with my hands on my hips.
