Chapter 44

Y/n POV

Kenji was grabbing Sammy's hand while I grabbed Aleem's hand. Brooklyn gave Sammy water as I placed another wet towel on Aleem's forehead. "You're good at this" said Kenji to Brooklyn. "My sponsors made me take, like, a million first-aid courses before some of my more dangerous trips" said Brooklyn. Kenji looks away as he says, "I wish I had learned anything useful before we got stuck here. Anything at all" said Kenji. Sammy leans into Kenji and mumbles out, "Bess? Bessie?" Kenji asked, "Is she dreaming?" "Even semiconscious, she's still super on-brand. I remember her saying Bessie was her favorite cow back home" said Brooklyn. "Huh. Cool" said Kenji.

I frown slightly removing the towel from Aleem's head, "At least she's talking... Aleem's been silent. He's been enduring this longer then her." Brooklyn got an idea, "Well, I think Sammy's showing you how you can help." Kenji mocks, "Yeah, right. And I suppose you think that if I go, 'Moo', she-" Sammy nuzzles more into Kenji while saying, "Bessie? Bess?" Kenji smiles as Brooklyn says, "Well, what are you waiting for, Bessie?"

Ben POV

"Let's go, Ben! For all we know, the Scorpios has caught up to Yaz by now!" yelled Darius. I strapped the canister to a gondola and grab a flare, "Almost ready." I activate it and shout, "Hit it!" Darius hits a button and the gondola begins to moves and I let go of the flare. We both run to the fence and watch the gondola move slowly to the top. "I hope it's enough" said Darius, "Oh, it will be" I said and chuckled. "You may wanna cover your ears. This should be a pretty big boom." We both cover our ears and there's a small poof in the gondola and barely any light, smoke, or fire. I uncover my ears and said disappointed, "But that-- What? Awe...." The gondola continued onto the top. "We have to do something!" shouted Darius.

"I might have some more gas stashed a few clicks from here!" I said stuttering and nervous. Darius frustrated and angrily, "Clicks? What the heck are clicks? Ben, we're out of time!" I try to calm him down, "I know, I'm-" I got cut of my a loud boom and light castes over us. We both slowly turn our heads and see that the gondola exploded at the top. We both starts to laugh and look at each other when suddenly debris that's on fire falls near us. We both cover our heads. "We should..." I said as I point into the opposite direction, "Yeah!" said Darius. We both start to run away as debris continues to fall.

Y/n POV

I rubbed Aleem's hand as he curls up into a fetus position and breaths heavily. "I hope you're dreaming about robotic sheep" I said and chuckled sadly since he didn't respond. I continue to hear Kenji mooing to Sammy, but it's not as effective. "Come on, you can do better then that" said Brooklyn. "Seriously? What else do cows do? Like, isn't it pretty much mooing and chewing?" asked Kenji. "Um, stomp your hooves" suggested Brooklyn. Kenji moos more and stomps his feet, Sammy smiles slightly so it worked a little. "Okay, now show some range. Be a mad cow" said Brooklyn. Kenji moos angrily and continues stomping his feet. But Sammy gets agitated and hugs Kenji as she shakes.

They both lay her down and Kenji asks, "What's going on? Why's she shaking?" Brooklyn asked, "Sammy?" Aleem starts to shake vigorously but stays in the fetus positions, "Guys... they're both shaking. Their immune systems are battling hard but this doesn't look good at all" I said as they look at me. "What do we do?" asked Kenji but Brooklyn replied, "I don't know." Brooklyn gets up and looks into the distance, "Where's Yaz?" Brooklyn kneels again near us and starts to look more worried. Aleem's breath was getting shallower and my eyes started to get wet and I whispered, "Don't leave me Aleem." We heard footsteps and saw Yasmina limping over, breathing heavily. Brooklyn shakes Sammy and says, "Sammy, it's Yaz!"

Yasmina falls as Brooklyn grabs the case she was carrying. Brooklyn loads the needle and was about to inject Sammy when I grabbed the needled stopping her. "What are you doing?!" shouted Yasmina, I frown as Yasmina tries to take my hand away. "You both know very well that Aleem should get injected first. He's been enduring this longer then Sammy, she can wait, he can't." I kept my eyes and grip firm until Brooklyn nodded. I let go as Brooklyn goes to Aleem and injects the antidote into him. After she quickly washed the needle and injected Sammy. Running footsteps were heard as Ben and Darius arrived, "We got back as soon as we... Are they...?" Ben asked worried.

Aleem and Sammy had stopped shaking but they just laid there... still. Everyone got saddened, Ben turned away and covered his face, Darius and Brooklyn hugged, I sniffled trying to stop the tears, Kenji grabbed his hair with frustration, and Yasmina grabbed Sammy's hand. "Come on" I whispered as I placed his hand on my forehead and felt how cold it was. "We need to leave this island first" I whispered to him, suddenly both of them started to cough roughly. Finally they opened their eyes and saw us. "Hey, Yaz" said Sammy weakly and Aleem whispered, "Y/n" as he struggled to open his eyes. I smile weakly, he's awake.
