Chapter 56

Y/n POV

"Hey! Hey, guys, check it out. These are just like the berry bushes on Nublar. Same leaves and everything!" yelled Ben as he ran to them, these bushes were near the water. "Water and food? What is it, our birthdays?" said Sammy. "I know, right?" said Kenji, I grabbed some berries but was skeptical. "Are we sure we can trust them? I mean berries exist that look like edible ones but aren't... so we can't just eat them because they look like ones from a separate ecosystem." Ben's eyes widened as it looked like he was having a panic attack as he watched the others, not including Aleem and me, eat the berries. I saw him spit them out and look at them with fear as his hands trembled.

"Don't eat them! Stop!" Ben shouted as he ran to the others and slapped the berries out of their hands. "Ben, what are you doing?!" asked Darius loudly. He grabbed Kenji who had his mouth full and pulled him down as he said, "What if I only think they're like the ones on Nublar, but they're really poisonous?" Kenji proceeds to spit them out and gag at what he said. Ben backs up and continues to ramble, "What if I'm wrong? Okay, okay. Everything will be fine, once we find that shiny thing." Darius tries to be positive, "Okay, it can't be too far now. Let's try to find it before the sun goes down." Yasmina muttered, "Great. That gives us about ten seconds."

Ben starts to run, "Come on, guys. We gotta move!" We follow after him and I hear Sammy shout, "There it is!" We run until we stop and see what appears to be a large metal plate on the ground. "A metal rectangle? That's all it was?" exclaimed Kenji. Ben breaths as he tries to make himself feel better, "Maybe there's more!" He starts to run somewhere, I decide to follow him because this behavior is really going to affect him if it continues. "No people. No help. Just... questions" Ben says as he lies on the ground and covers his eyes. I kneel and try to put my hand on his shoulder but he just moves away from me. He can't be putting everything on himself like this.

~Time Skip~

It was nighttime and the stars were shining bright as the fire we built rose high. We all sat around it in silence, I glanced at Ben and saw him looking at everyone. Sammy suddenly stands up, a couple seconds of silence until she suddenly shouts at the top of her lungs. We all looked at her confused, I never expected that from her. Then Yasmina stands up and shouts, after Darius, then Brooklyn and Kenji follow suit. They continue screaming, I certainly hope there are no predators nearby hearing all of this commotion. Sammy grabs Ben's hand and pulls him up to stand but he just stares, he doesn't scream along. I just sat there, narrowing my eyes at this weird action. Aleem covered his ears as he was trying to relax.

~Time Skip~

Ben's POV

I gasp as I sit up, what was that? I swear I heard something out there. Everyone else was sleeping, "Ben? What is it?", I turned and saw that Y/n had woken up. I crawl to the embers of the fire and start blowing at it. "Guys. Guys!" I say trying to wake them up. "What's up?" asked Darius, "There's something out there" I said. "What's going on?" asked Kenji as he woke up. "I heard a noise" I said as I stared into the plants. "Are you sure, Ben? Maybe this is like yesterday with the berries." questioned Darius. I responded, "I'm sure. At least... I think?" Suddenly rustling leaves are heard and we all gasp in fear. I breathe heavily as I stare and wait, please, please, let me be wrong. Suddenly something jumped out of the leaves and growled, we all screamed.

Y/n POV

A saber-toothed tiger just jumped out of those leaves, this isn't natural! We all backed up as Ben grabbed a stick that was on fire from the bonfire. "What is that?!" asked Brooklym loudly. "Saber-toothed tiger!" Aleem responded alarmed. It roared and started to walk toward us. "I told you we time-traveled" said Kenji and Yasmina responded with, "Shut up, Kenji." We walk in circles around the bonfire as did the Saber-toothed tiger. It snarls and Sammy stammers, "What do we do? What do we do?" Ben looks away and starts to run while shouting, "Hey! Toothy! This way!" The Saber-toothed tiger follows him as he runs with the torch (stick on fire.) "Ben!" I shouted and started to run after them.

"Y/N!" shouted Aleem but I didn't care as I followed. I could barely see but from what I could it seemed as if Ben was jumping around the canyon but then the light from his torch disappeared. NO! He must have fallen down there, so I started to sprint even faster. I ran along the side of the canyon and I could see the light of the torch moving, the tiger must have fallen down too! The light then went out, "No..." I said. Suddenly out of nowhere Kenji jumps down into the dark canyon. I can only hear what's happening, is he brawling with the tiger? It sounds like they're running, I see a perfectly positioned boulder that can be thrown down to block it. I run up to it and start pushing it. Others came to help me and we managed to push it down on time.

The tiger roared at us and we started to throw rocks at it. As we continue the barrage of rocks, I hear what appears to be Ben's screaming. Guess, he finally let it out of his system, that works. The tiger goes away and we start cheering. When they finally got out of the canyon, we started to run to them. I was the first one to reach them and hugged Ben, almost causing him to fall. "Ben! Why would you do something so.....so.....stupid! You scared me!" I said with unshed tears in my eyes. Brooklyn then came and hugged Kenji hard, an interesting interaction. "Oh! You idiots! What were you thinking?" asked Brooklyn as we went into a group circle. Kenji responds, "'Thinking'? That didn't play a huge part in it."

Everyone starts to laugh at what he said even though it was dangerous to jump on a revived extinct animal. Ben frowns as he separates from the group circle. I frown and ask, "Ben... what's wrong?" He responds, "It's just that... I work so hard to not be 'Scared Ben' anymore. But the minute we leave Nublar, I'm right back to square one. Freaking out with the berries. Freaking out about the tiger." I walk up to him and he lets me finally place my hand on his shoulder, "Ben, we're still alive because of that. If you didn't warn us it would have been worse." He looks at me and says, "Yeah, well, at least 'Scared Ben' is good for something." I sigh, "Ben, you risked yourself to save us. You're not 'Brave Ben' but you're also not 'Scared Ben'. How about we get the best from both worlds and just be 'Ben'."

Ben chuckles and says, "That does have a nice ring to it." Kenji adds, "And I'm just Kenji... the brave." Brooklyn continues, "I guess that just makes me Brooklyn, the smart. Right, Kenj?" Kenji looks at her hand, he looks... nervous and flustered? We laugh it off until Yasmina asks, "So, what now?" Ben answers, "Now, we do the only thing we can do. Keep going." Darius added, "And look out for saber-toothed tigers, freak sandstorms, and whatever the heck else this place has in store for us." Aleem asks, "Dinosaurs?" Darius says, "Let's hope not." Ben finishes, "At least, we have each other." "That's the best 'at least' yet" said Sammy. We do a group hug and I manage to sneak a kiss onto Ben and whisper, "Don't put all the pressure on yourself. We have each other."

~Time Skip~

The sun was rising as we walked, where? Who knows where? "It's too quiet," said Kenji. "We're hot, thirsty, in the middle of nowhere, and maybe surrounded by who knows what, but that's your complaint?" asked Brooklyn. "Yeah. Because at least we can do something about it" said Kenji and then he started to make weird noises. Suddenly he yelps as he trips on something, "Oh, what the..." he says. "What is that?" asked Yasmina as Kenji swipes the desert sand of the object. It was metallic, then everyone started to run. Confused, I decided to run with them, I don't understand what clicked with them. Kenji bumps into something and falls down. "Kenji, you okay?" asked Ben, he groaned as he got up and put his hand on... something tangible.

Brooklyn starts touching the... invisible wall and suddenly it opens up revealing a metallic tunnel. We all gasp and look inside when the light turns on revealing another door at the end of the tunnel. How is there an invisible wall? Is this environment artificial? Should we go into this tunnel? Who knows...?
