December 4th 2023"Hello Ms Johnson, I'm doctor Lawrence and I'll be the anesthesiologist for your surgery today" Destiny spoke with a small smile.
"Hello" Mr Johnson smiled, "is this your first time?"
"No actually" she replied, "this would be my fourth time doing this by myself"
"But don't be too frightened, I've observed more surgeries than I can remember so I'm basically a pro" Destiny added.
"Okay—I trust you, we have to have faith in our young black men and women in the medical field"
"Alright I'll be back in a second" Destiny said walking out of the room before stumbling a little.
"Girl you okay?" Ty'miah asked Destiny.
"Yea I'm okay" she gave a little smile, "I just had a stumble, it's fine"
"You lookin' a little pale—kinda like you got white people sunscreen on"
"I'm fine, I just didn't eat anything today" Destiny said before turning around to walk. As she walked she felt a little dizzy seconds before she fell to the floor.
. . . . . . .
2:45pm"Keep pushing fluids" Destiny heard as she opens her eyes.
She looked around seeing she was in the hospital where she works but she became a patient. She looked down at her arm seeing a iv drip in it before looking on her right.
"Baby" her voice cracked causing him to snap his head towards her.
"Hey mama" he kissed her hand.
"What happened?, why am I in a hospital bed?" She asked sitting up.
"You passed out while you was workin'"
"Shit" Destiny said with closed eyes, "it must've been because I didn't eat anything today"
Ja'rod smacked his teeth, "I don' told yo' hardheaded ass bout doing that shit, do I gotta start packing yo' lunch?"
Destiny opened her eyes, "i know you're not talking about the two things we actually argue about"
"You don't eat, I eat more than you—I see you get once a freaking day and you have the audacity to come for me? And then you are so hardheaded it makes me mad"
"Aight bro" ja'rod smacked his lips.
"Don't get quiet now cause you know I'm right"
"Okay but I'm not the one passing out and ended up in da' hospital"
"Hey Destiny" Ty'miah spoke.
"Hey girl"
"You scared me today, I never called for a gurney so fucking fast" she chuckled causing Destiny to let out a laugh.
"Yea, I gotta start eating in the mornings"
"Well anyway, doctor evens is going to come and give you your results"
"Okay"
*15 minutes later*
"Man this shit taking too long" ja'rod groaned.
"That's the er for you"
"Hello Destiny I'm sorry that took so long" doctor evens spoke.
"It's fine"
"So um everything looks regular, the reason you passed out was due to dehydration"
"I figured" Destiny mumbled.
"But don't worry your baby is just fine" doctor evens said causing both Destiny and ja'rod to look up with big eyes.
"Baby?" Destiny asked with confusion in her tone, "not that can't be right, I just had my period"
Doctor evens looked up before speaking, "I'm assuming that you guys didn't know about the pregnancy"
"Nah we didn't" he said looking at Destiny.
"Well I can tell you that you are about one month pregnant"
"The fuck?" Ja'rod says.
"One month?" Destiny stressed, "I've been drinking and eating unhealthy foods! Are you sure the baby's okay?"
"I can assure you that the baby is doing just fine, we ran tests and the results are perfect" the doctor smiled, "I'm going to give you all a minute"
"No we're good" destiny assured.
"Okay well here are some vitamins, you need to take these everyday and also get and drink every day—we don't want this happening again" doctor evens smiled before leaving the room.
Destiny was soon discharged. The couple drove in an awkward silence, not knowing what to say.
"Did you know?" Ja'rod asks with his jaw clenched.
"No" she rolled her eyes, "if I knew I wouldn't have been drinking or smoking and I would've told you"
"Ain't you just say you had yo' period? Sum' ain't right"
"Bleeding is common during pregnancy—it's usually called spotting" she explained.
"You a month though—you ain't notice nothin'?"
Destiny sighed, "no ja'rod I didn't notice anything" she spoke before thinking, "I mean I saw a little pudge in my stomach but I just thought it was from food or something"
"Nah sum' ain't right"
"What are you trying to say ja'rod?!" She exclaimed, "why you acting like you've haven't been nutting in me for the past few months"
"I thought you was on birth control—you said you didn't want kids" he argued back.
"I've taken a plan b each time we've had sex" she felt tears in her eyes, "I don't know maybe I took them too late or I forgot sometimes"
Ja'rod sighed as he parked and got out the car. He walked over to Destiny's side before helping her out and pulling her into a hug.
"Aye don't cry"
She sniffled, "I'm not"
"You are—stop, ain't shit ta' cry about" he uttered, "I'm not forcing you to do anything youn wanna do, it's your decision"
She pushed him away and began walking inside his house. He followed behind her only to see her crying on the couch.
"Why you pushed me away?"
"Because this isn't just my decision" she cried, "this will affect you too and it's your baby, you have a say too"
"Nah I really don't" he shook his head, "its yo' body"
She sobbed even more at his statement, "I-i don't know!—y-you have to help me-e!" She panicked.
"Aye calm down" he wrapped his arms around her body. Eventually she calmed down before speaking.
"I'm scared"
"Why?"
"I don't know" she wiped her eyes, "what do you want to do?"
"You can't ask me that"
"But I am—I don't care, just tell me how you feel and what you think"
Ja'rod hesitated before speaking, "I want it—but if you don't I understand and I'm okay with that, if you want to get an abortion, I'a be there for you"
"If you want to keep it, I'a be there for you—and the baby" he spoke, "but regardless it don't matter what I say, it's your body and I respect your choice"
