CHAPTER EIGHTY-ONE
the nine potters

𝐃𝐀𝐊𝐎𝐓𝐀 𝐃𝐔𝐑𝐒𝐋𝐄𝐘 𝐀𝐋𝐖𝐀𝐘𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 the day she would be completely free from her parents and twin brother would be the happiest day of her life. They had never shown her twice as much as the affection that they gave Dudley, and they had exiled her completely the moment Rubeus Hagrid broke down their door and told her that she was a witch.

So why did she feel so gloomy watching their car drive away from number 4 Privet Drive? Was it because of the regretful look Dudley had given her and Harry when he found out they weren't coming with them? Was it because her mother had told her before she left that she had grown to be a much better person than she was ever going to be? Whatever it was, it definitely wasn't because her father had sent her and Harry a glare before driving away.

Maybe in another life, things could've been different. Maybe in another life, she and Dudley could've been like a real brother and sister. He and Harry could've been like real cousins. But this was this life. And right now in this life, they were in the middle of a wizarding war.

"Where did you get that shard from?" Dakota asked Harry as she sat on the bed with her cat, Bongo, curled up in her lap purring. She pointed to the shard in her cousin's hand.

"It belonged to a mirror," Harry told her. "A set of two-way mirrors. Sirius gave one of them to me, but it broke in my trunk. This is all I have left. . .It's odd. I could've sworn I saw Dumbledore in it just now."

"Harry, that's impossible," Dakota said. "He's. . ." She trailed off.

"Dead. I know." Harry tucked the shard away into his bag. "Are you all packed?"

"Yep." Dakota held up a small drawstring bag.

Harry frowned. "You couldn't possibly have fit all of your belongings in that, Kody."

"Undetectable extension charm, Hairball." Dakota smirked. "It was Hermione's idea."

They went downstairs. The house was empty save for what was in the cousins' room and the cupboard under the stairs where Harry used to sleep.

"I still have it, you know," Dakota said as Harry was examining the crayons he used to color with. She took out the homemade birthday card that Harry had made her for her eleventh birthday. "To this day, I still consider it my most prized possession."

"What do you think eleven year old Harry and Dakota would say if they knew how things turned out for us?" Harry asked as he closed the door to the cupboard.

Dakota leaned back against the stairs, humming softly in thought. "I think the better question is what we would tell them so that they'd be better prepared?"
