His fingers played with the blade, lightly carving a 'D' into the side of his brown boot, his tongue sticking out the side of his mouth as he concentrated, hissing in frustration when his overgrown brown hair fell over his blue eyes, momentarily blinding him. He paused when he heard laughter from behind him and Damon turned, raising an eyebrow when he caught sight of his little brother, giggling alongside Sophia Peletier as they pretended that the long sticks they had were swords, the little girl successfully stabbing Carl in the ribs for a moment. Carl backed up a step before crying out in victory when he managed to knock the stick out of Sophia's hands. Damon sighed in envy, remembering when he was that innocent and wishing he could be as oblivious to the horror as Carl was. He knew it was a matter of time before this world crept up on Carl and Damon Grimes dreaded when it happened.
"Hey, Dames." Shane Walsh caught Damon's attention and the sixteen year old boy lifted his head, locking eyes with the best friend of his deceased father, the man that he had once called 'Uncle Shane'. "You doing okay, pal?"
Damon shrugged, playing with his pocket knife in the pocket of his blue hoodie, which hung off his lean shoulders. "Gotta be, I guess."
"That's not an answer, bud."
"My hair keeps getting in my damn eyes," he complained, not mentioning his thoughts regarding his brother's innocence. "It's annoying the fuck out of me."
"Damon!" Lori exclaimed, causing him to freeze. "Language!"
He gave her a sheepish smile as she appeared beside Shane, her hands on her hips. "Sorry, Mom."
"I could cut your hair for you, baby." She sat beside him on the log, running her fingers through his hair longingly.
Damon swatted her hands away. "You're not touching my hair, Mom."
Shane chuckled, lifting his rifle so it was against his shoulder. "How can you complain about your hair getting in your face if you won't let your mom cut it?"
"I can complain all I want, but that doesn't mean I want anything to be done with it."
"I cut your brother's hair." Lori frowned, a tad frustrated that her eldest son wouldn't allow her to cut his hair. He used to, when he was younger, but things had changed, especially since her husband was hospitalized four months ago. "It's not like I'm gonna mess it up."
"I said I don't want you to cut it, damn, Lori, can't you shut up about it?" Damon snapped, causing his mother to raise an eyebrow, suggesting she didn't like his attitude and the fact that he hadn't called her 'mom' like usual.
"Do not talk to me like that, young man-!"
"Damon, come with me." Shane announced suddenly, giving Lori a glance that told her to trust him.
Damon eyed his godfather suspiciously, angered at the sight of him commanding him like a father. "Why?"
"You're helping me get the water from the creek." He ordered, giving Lori a simple nod before walking towards his jeep. "Now, Dames."
He scoffed but did as he was told, knowing he lacked a choice in the matter. He hated how often his mother and Shane treated him like he was a child, like he was Carl's age when he was nearly seventeen years old. He wasn't a little boy and he wasn't stupid. Besides, he wasn't a Walsh and he didn't want Shane believing he could stand up and take his father's place. Rick Grimes was his father and that wasn't going to change whether he was dead or not. Wordlessly, he climbed into the passenger seat of the jeep and turned away from Shane as the man started the engine, driving down the dirt road towards the creek. They were to fill the containers with water before the water was boiled to be used. Darius expected Shane to say something, anything, but the short drive remained silent until they got to their destination.
