He burst out laughing, startling both Sam and Castiel, but upon seeing that he was merely watching a funny video on his laptop, they both relaxed. Evelyn was leaning over his shoulder, having shown him the video herself and before anyone could stop him, Dean fell from his chair, crying in laughter and Evelyn couldn't resist the giggles that were now escaping her lips. All of a sudden, she erupted in happiness herself, falling onto the floor of the motel room right alongside the hunter. She was holding onto her ribs as Dean punched the floor in an attempt to get rid of the painful joy that had come over him. They didn't even know what they were laughing about anymore, they only knew they couldn't stop.
Sam chuckled at his brother and best friend, but Castiel found himself frowning as he studied his girlfriend with the man he considered family. He had been with Evelyn for the better part of a year now—and they had been friends even longer—but he couldn't remember ever having made her laugh the way Dean had. His laugh had sent her to the floor, tears in her eyes as she giggled, a sound that seemed to have grown in volume the longer she and Dean were left be. He hadn't meant to notice how close she was with Dean; it was something that was suddenly on his mind. Mere minutes before, it hadn't bothered him. She was human, he wasn't and he knew she spent a lot of time with the brothers but it hadn't felt like he had been punched in the gut until now.
"Cas?" Sam noticed his frown and snapped his fingers in front of the angel. "What's up? You okay?"
Evelyn and Dean had now snapped out of it and were watching the interaction but she was leaning against the hunter, barely so but enough that he noticed it and he found himself glaring at his own friend without meaning to. "Cas. You're cute when you're frowning but what's up?" She grinned.
Dean seemed amused by the frown. "Yeah, Cas, what's up?" He said almost teasingly.
"I'm fine." He abruptly stood up. "I have to go."
"Babe-" Evelyn began getting to her feet, her teasing joy now long when she saw that he was actually on edge. However, he was gone with the sound of wings, not giving the brunette a chance to even touch him. "Did I do something?" She pouted, looking between her friends.
"I think he's just in a mood," Sam shrugged.
Dean snickered, climbing to his feet and beginning to root through the mini-fridge. "Yeah, a mood called jealousy."
Evelyn scoffed. "What on earth would he be jealous of?"
"You and me." He said without a hint of hesitation and he winked when she merely gave him a look of confusion. "You're basically my sister, Evey, you know that. We're close, but your angel might think things are more than they are."
"No way."
"Way." He happily sipped his beer, knowing and understanding why Castiel was feeling this way. He never once considered Evelyn Harvelle to be anything but a friend, never once thinking that she could be a romantic interest, but Castiel was new to human emotions. He didn't understand that you didn't have to be blood to consider a girl a sister.
"I'm just as close as Sam though." She argued, sitting at the end of the bed Sam slept in. She was frowning, playing with her fingers as she imagined why Cas would think she would want anyone but him.
"Yeah, but Sam's boring, so obviously, you prefer me."
"Hey!"
Evelyn looked much like the mother that had now passed away. She had shoulder length dark brown hair and dark eyes with a round face and she was significantly shorter than both the brothers, but she had been as tall as her sister. Jo and Ellen were gone now, but Evelyn had found a way of continuing, even when the grief had nearly consumed her to the point that she would've given up if not for the men in her life. Dean, Sam, Cas and Bobby were now all she had and she didn't know what she would do without them. The Winchesters were her brothers. She and Dean were similar in personality, minus the sexual activity and his seemingly need to always be on the lookout for a hookup, which is why she considered him her favorite brother. She never told Sam that, but he was the same concerning their intelligence. She wasn't a saint, she wasn't a virgin and she damn well wasn't perfect.
