One might consider Steven Young weak, but he knew he wasn't and he didn't need people to tell him otherwise. He wasn't perfect and he has made a lot of mistakes in his life, but he knew he was strong to be and suffer what he currently was. He had had a bad childhood that ended the moment he turned fifteen, as he ran off to make his own future, bringing his younger brother, Stanley, with him. He would never have dreamed of leaving the younger boy behind, as he was the reason why he had stayed as long as he did. Stanley was his favorite person and he had felt responsible for the younger boy since the day his little brother was born.
The problem with being the older brother was that he needed to take care of him, be responsible for him and protect him no matter what and that meant doing things to survive the streets that he wasn't proud of. He would do anything for Stan, and anyone that knew Stevie knew that. Becoming a member of a gang was one of them, and by the time he was eighteen years old, everyone on the streets knew not to mess with Stevie Young. They knew even more not to mess with Stanley either, as it meant his brother's wrath if they did. He had proven that more than once.
Three and a half years later, Stevie felt like his world had been destroyed when a newly turned eighteen year old Stanley joined the same gang as him, which he had only joined himself in order to gain protection, to avoid his brother living a shorter life than what he deserved. He should've seen it coming, but he had made the money to get Stan through school, he had done everything right for him, everything that no one had done for him. That as the point, for Stan to have what Stevie didn't. His brother could've had a future, he could've had a crime free life, but he made his biggest mistake by following his brother's footsteps. He accidentally killed a man and due to seeing the pure regret and anguish on Stan's face, Stevie took the blame, making Stanley promise to leave town and become something else.
That was over two months ago and following his confession at trial, Stevie was taken to Fox River Penitentiary, where he knew his life would eventually end. He was only twenty-one years old, he wasn't the most intelligent man and he wasn't a murderer, despite his survivor skills. He wouldn't survive in here, but he had a better chance than Stanley would have had. His future was uncertain, a mist of confusion and he could see a thousand different ways he could end up in a body bag within these walls, but better him than Stan. That was just how he decided to see it. He didn't have to wait long for someone to take notice of his good looks, which he knew wouldn't be a good thing here. In his foster homes before his inevitable escape, they hadn't been an advantage either, but on the streets, he was able to get what he wanted using his charm and handsome smile. He couldn't do that here unless he did something he didn't want to do. Fuck that.
"Now, look at that face!" A creepy and most terrifying voice echoed as he and his fellow new prison mates walked, their arms holding their fresh clothes. "I call dibs on Baby Face!"
"Cry, girlie! Cry!"
The voices echoed and the boy behind him, who appeared only slightly older than him, was sobbing hysterically, proving to the other prisoners he was easy to break, which was definitely not what he would need right now. Stevie was terrified and he felt like he was going to break down, but he felt his expression impassive, his lean body covered by navy blue colored pants and a light blue shirt, a white t-shirt beneath him. He was escorted by a guard onto the second floor and his eyes met one of the prisoners as they passed his cell, but Stevie quickly looked away, somehow believing they would see his fear otherwise. He was taken to the cell beside his, where an elderly man was, lying on the top bunk with a book. He didn't say a word as he entered the cell, placing his clothes on the bottom bunk as the cell door shut behind him.
"You're hiding your fear," the elderly man noted and Stevie glanced up, noticing that the older man's hair was overgrown, his beady blue eyes remaining on the pages of the book. "That's good. It means you might survive in here."
