I had nothing planned to wear for dinner tonight.
After countless outfit picking, I had settled with my favorite flowered long dress that I wore almost all the time for church or any special event for that matter. It was my go-to. The only person who hadn't seen me in this dress was Holden, so it was an exception to wear and not feel embarrassed from wearing it all the time.
I had spent my whole Saturday getting rid of the dead flowers and soil with some of my dad's help since my my mom was cooking food all day. My mom always wanted to go the extra mile when having guests over. She always did when she had any of her friends from church over or sometimes even when Braylee and Emily came over. But, today it was just a little too overboard considering she made food to last the whole week and also a variety of pastry options which I couldn't really complain about because she had made a copycat version of my favorite cookies down the street which genuinely tasted better than the actual thing when I got a test taste earlier.
Mom's never went wrong with food.
After placing my white flats on, and a few hair clips on my hair I prayed a short prayer of guidance, and a successful dinner to the man above. A little guidance and push of confidence from Him never hurt. I finally made my way downstairs to make sure my mom didn't need any help. It was approximately five thirty in the evening so we had about thirty minutes to spare before Holden arrived.
Honestly, I couldn't be more nervous than I am now. Nothing new. But today I was little extra nervous. My parents were going to get to know Holden today. Like actually get to know Holden. This wasn't no ordinary dinner, this was the actual deal. I was all the more nervous on what my dad wanted to talk to Holden about. I hoped he would forget about it once he was here.
My dad was scary at times. Gee, even I was scared of the guy sometimes.
I helped my mom take the last few things to the table and I recoiled, noticing my dad out in the backyard, watching the sun as it began to set. It looked beautiful, now that I was noticing it. The sky had its perfect glow of orang and red, just the right colors.
"What's dad doing out there, mom?" I asked, silently as I finished setting the table.
"I don't know, pea. Just thinking, probably," Mom said, glancing briefly at him from out the window.
"Hm..." I watched for a little longer as he remained outside, staring quietly at the sky. It was a little minute later when I finally decided to go check on him. "Dad? What are you thinking about?" I smiled as I stood beside him, gazing at the sunset too.
Dad looked down at me, grinning slightly before he turned his attention back to the sunset. "Praying, Heidi. Just praying," he muttered as he rubbed my shoulder gently. I wondered what he prayed about but quickly decided to just leave it at that, not wanting to intrude in his personal conversation. I surely, wouldn't want to share what I was praying about to anyone, unless we were praying together.
