By the time we were home my throat ached terribly. It felt like something prickly sat in the back of my throat and when I swallowed all I felt was an achy burning sensation. It was the definite signs of a cold. I couldn't remember when was the last time I got sick. I rarely got sick. Ever.
"I'll walk you in." Holden jumped out of the truck and I began to gather my things in place. "Let me," Holden took the backpack from my hand as soon as he was at my side.
"Holden...I could manage."
Without an argument he helped me down the truck and we began to make our way toward the house. My parents were already home for probably an hour or two considering it was half hour till seven. They were always home at approximately five in the dot. Never did they ever arrive at least ten minutes later unless they had something to do in which they usually let me know in advance. I was thankful. That way I didn't have to worry that they weren't home yet.
"I know you could," Holden said finally when he saw my agitated expression. "But I want to help." He looked at me intently, watching me with those green of eyes of his that were hard to function with. I wanted to thank him a million times in kisses but that wasn't possible when we were just a few steps away from my parents and not to mention I was sick.
"And I love you for it," I said.
Holden laid a hand on my lower back as we made it through the door. My mom was sitting in the living room, watching the news on the TV and dad was probably up the stairs showering considering he was nowhere in sight. "Honey! How was work?" Mom stood up from the couch eagerly. "Holden. Nice to see you!" she went to hug him and then came to hug me afterward.
"Careful. I don't want to get you sick, mom."
"Sick?" She pulled away, analyzing my face from forehead to chin. Concern was written all over her face.
"Yeah." For emphasis I felt a sneeze starting to creep up my nose. "Clearly." I laughed, turning away from the both of them to not contaminate them. And then the loud sneeze came. Sadly, I was one of the people who didn't know how to keep them silent.
"How?"
"It was probably from yesterday when we went down to the beach. It was freezing cold and we had gotten into the water." I explained squeezing my nose with a crumpled napkin I had found inside my backpack.
"How come?" Mom asked curiously, glancing from Holden to me. I had forgotten she had absolutely no clue that Holden had spontaneously gotten baptized last night. Well, this is going to be interesting. I glanced over to Holden only to see he was standing there, hands in his pockets looking nervous as ever. Holden, nervous? It never got old. It was always in front of mom or dad.
"I'll take full accountability for it," Holden spoke and I gave him a look.
"No! It was my choice. He always wants to take the full blame for everything I decide to do it. Don't listen to him, mom." I shook my head at him.
