Oh, the lawn looked so cute and so much better than before.
I was falling more and more in love by the second.
"It looks more lively!" I shrieked, wrapping my arms around Holden's neck, my eyes never leaving the row of flowers. My clothes and his were covered in dirt and soil but I didn't care. It took us about the whole afternoon and the sun was already almost completely down now.
My parents were astonished as I had predicted them to be. My mom looked the more in awe of all this whole thing. She even insisted to pay him back the money he had wasted on the flowers, but Holden immediately refused her offer just like he had refused mine. I wasn't surprised. My dad in the other hand looked more pleased at Holden's gesture. Not that he had to approve of it, but he looked a little too pleased that he'd gone far and beyond to buy me the flowers and help plant them.
Later dad did offer to lend a helpful hand so it was a little less work for us. We probably would've gotten finished by tomorrow if it wasn't for my dad's extra help.
"It does. It looks...less dead." Holden said, scrutiny visible on his face as he observed the done lawn. I gave him a look. "I'm just being honest, love." He laughed at the offended look on my face.
"You know I still have the roses you gave me in my room. They are holding in there but..." I paused then smiled at the deep look of admiration on Holden's face. They were getting well taken care of so they were still holding up strong which I was incredibly proud of. All thanks to my gardening skills, may I add. These flowers he gifted me were equally as great as those roses.
"I'm surprised they haven't died yet." Holden said and I shook my head at his straight up thought. I smiled tiredly against his chest as I felt myself growing exhausted by the second.
Slowly, he pulled away from my embrace a little and then wiped off something from my face. Dirt I guessed. "I'm tired." I groaned onto his shoulder and laid my head there for a long five minutes. My eyes were droopy and weak that I felt I could just fall asleep here on his shoulder, standing and all. All I needed was a good shoulder rub and I'll be gone, but that sadly didn't happen.
"You think I forgot, didn't you?" Holden asked.
"Forgot what?" I asked, dumbfounded. I was oblivious as to what he was talking about until I thought more about what could he possibly be talking about and then I remembered.
His manuscript.
Whoops.
"Oh, come on! I have it already. Might as well just let me read it all." I smiled shyly, brushing some of the dirt of his shoulder in order to make it look I was doing something. A girl could only play it off so smoothly.
"We need a shower." He commented after a while, completely ignoring my argument. I ignored the fact that that sounded very wrong and instead grew satisfied that his lack of answering of my suggestion meant he was letting me read the entirety of his manuscript. He just couldn't get himself to say admit it and say 'yes'.
