"Are you telling me where we are going now?" I asked, maneuvering my way around my seat to get comfortable. He hasn't yet mentioned anything of where we might be going. Not even hinted at anything. I hoped he would give me at least one small clue but I knew he would refuse if I did ask.
Holden looked away from the road for a moment to glance at me. "We're almost there," he said, simply. That pretty much answered my question. He wasn't going to admit where we were going until we actually got there. From what it looked like we weren't going anywhere outside the city. So, at least I knew that much.
"You know, my mom has my location, just in case," I teased, glancing out the window. The air was so chilly as it blew against my face but at the same time it was very peaceful. Figures. I couldn't decide. Something about the evening air just made the whole world seem so nostalgic. From what? I didn't know exactly, but It just was. All I knew was that life felt good right now.
Holden breathed out a laugh. "I'm not kidnapping you, love," he muttered.
My attention shifted away from the window at the mention of that word again. My stomach fluttered with butterflies immediately. He always seemed to catch me off guard with that name. He always knew exactly when to use it. "Love?" I found myself asking. I was genuinely curious what he had to say about it. About why he called me 'love' when he hadn't told me he loved me nor have I. It would be a big thing to admit. Love was such a strong word. It's not a word you just blurt out into the wild unless you actually mean it. It was setting you to be vulnerable with each other.
Would I mean it? if I said it right now?
Holden clenched the steering wheel slightly as he turned right into the park parking lot. "Yeah," he spoke, dismissively, like if it had no affect on him. He was very brief with his response, not displaying a single sign of hesitance as he confirmed it. If I had to say, he looked very unbothered. If he was caught off guard from the question then he was hiding it pretty well. I wouldn't have demanded an answer from him anyway. It would be too quick for the both of us to admit or know if we felt that way toward each other.
"The park?" I bursted in excitement, immediately dismissing our current subject. As I observed the surroundings a little more closely I realized that the park seemed very secluded and hidden. No people looked to be anywhere in sight. At all. "When did you find this place?" I questioned as he pulled into the parking spot in reverse.
"Years ago." He turned off the truck. "Wait here," he grinned a little before he gave me a quick kiss in the lips and then stepped out of the truck and went toward the back. Confused, and at the same time filled with great eagerness at what he had up his sleeve I waited patiently.
Plenty of movement and noises later Holden finally came back but through my side.
He opened my door and there he stood with a bouquet of flowers in his hand. They were no ordinary flowers but they were roses. My favorite.
