Yesterday had been one of the best days in my entire life. I spent the entire day and night with my beautiful girlfriend. There wasn't anything more that I could have wished for.
Well, maybe one thing. I didn't want to go to work today.
After a lot of contemplation, I decided I would just go in today instead of calling in sick. I had used most of my sick hours that week that Diana had broken up with me.
I needed the money after all.
Diana offered to drop me off at my house pretty early in the morning so I could spend some time with Maggie. Instead, I ultimately decided to spend the day with her until I needed to head to work. I figured when I got home I can just spend the rest of the day with Maggie.
My shift started at 12 and luckily it was only a 6 hour shift.
I'm halfway through my shift and I can't seem to focus on my book. My breaks usually go like this. I sit in my usual spot, I pull my book out, and I try to read but my mind drifts off to a certain someone.
Diana floods my mind all the time. I think about her constantly and especially after last night, I can't help but to think about her.
We ended our night together, in each other's arms, enjoying each other's presence. There wasn't anything else like it. There was no greater feeling in the world than when I was there in her arms.
We sent occasionally texts throughout my shift whenever I wasn't busy. She said she was going to be at home trying to get some work done for the next week coming up.
"Hey kid, could you throw the trash out?" Joe asked me as he was busy preparing a few orders.
"You got it."
I got up from my table and went to place my book inside my locker before grabbing the trash.
Throwing away trash had been my least favorite part of the day but I knew it was still part of the job.
I walked through the back door and went to throw the trash away in the dumpster before noticing a small kitten right by it.
It was a small white kitten. I could tell it was a least a few weeks old, still extremely small.
"Hey kitty." I kneeled down slowly and began approaching the kitten.
Instead of running away like I had expected, the kitten began walking closer and meowing loudly. I looked around the dumpster for any sign of others but this one was by itself.
I knew I shouldn't touch it, in case the mother didn't want to keep the kitten anymore.
I went inside and brought out a small bowl of milk. I didn't know what else it could eat.
I left it next to the dumpster and watched as the small kitten sat next to the bowl and began lapping at the milk.
I knew I would have to return later to see if the kitten was still here by then.
I went back into work and decided to finish my last few hours.

After my shift was over, I immediately took my apron off, grabbed my bag, and headed out the back door.
The kitten was still there. It laid slightly shivering underneath the dumpster.
