'Why is there a corpse on the table?' Luna questioned, stopping in her tracks as she observed the book club from hell that Elijah and Klaus were hosting.

'This is a...' Elijah paused, gesturing as though he was searching for a word, '...peace offering.'

'I presumed, after so much time desiccating in a coffin, that my big brother might be a bit peckish.' Klaus sighed, turning his head to the side to lock eyes with Luna momentarily before shifting his attention back to the book before him.

'And I explained to my little brother that forgiveness cannot be bought. I'd simply prefer to see a change in behaviour that indicates contrition and personal growth.' Elijah countered rationally, gaining him a guilty eye roll from Klaus.

'And the balance has been restored.' Luna muttered, referring to the mindless bickering.

'Well, I supposed I'll go fetch a rubbish bin, because she's staining a two hundred - year - old carpet.' Rebekah reprimanded.

As more bickering ensued amongst the siblings, Luna took it as her chance to make a quiet escape into the kitchen, searching for food. Soon after, Klaus walked into the kitchen still clutching the book against his chest, silently watching the girl.

Once Luna noticed him, she smiled widely only to receive a weak smile in return, 'I know none of you really have to eat, but I'd be nice to have some food anyway,' Luna voiced as she continued to ransack the cabinets, 'Is there anything at all?' She muttered to herself.

'I'll keep that in mind,' He replied, opening the freezer and taking out a carton of ice cream, sliding it across the counter top into her direction. Without hesitation, she grabbed a spoon and scooped herself a generous amount, 'Elijah has elected me to come with him to deal with the witches, so...'

'So, you'll be gone again? I feel like I've barely seen you in the last two weeks.' Luna stated, narrowing her eyes at the title of the book, 'A Poison Tree.' Her eyes flicked between the books name and Klaus' eyes. Suddenly, his withdrawn and reserved demeanour made sense. Luna chose to keep her mouth shut, opting on stuffing her face with a mouthful of ice cream.

'I'm not keeping you here out of spite, Luna,' Klaus proclaimed, his eyes flickering with sympathy, 'It shouldn't be long now. Rebekah will stay with you today.' He informed the siphon. She didn't speak, only sighed as she ate her food and tried to generate  a counter point. His eyes burned holes into the side of her head, anticipating a response from her.

She gazed at him momentarily, 'Fine. Whatever. It's not like I have anything better to do.' She sighed. He stepped forward, placing a hand on her lower back and a chaste kiss on her forehead in an attempt to offer her a semblance of comfort before he left her alone in the kitchen without another word.

But what he didn't know -- or what he chose to ignore -- was that the only thing which would fulfil the comfort she needed was him staying with her.
