Griff walked into the clubhouse and saw Reaper sitting at the bar.
Everyone else was no where to be seen, a bit strange for the time of day, but he wasn't gonna complain.
He had intended to find Gin, see if she wanted to talk, but as soon as he saw Reaper he changed his mind. After hearing what he went through, then not seeing him for a week, he felt like he should comfort the old man.
He walked over to him, grabbed a beer and sat on the stool next to the old man. "Hey, you okay?" A stupid question? Maybe, but it was all he could think of at the moment.
Reaper didn't move, just kept his focus towards the bottle of whiskey. "Never gonna be okay, kid."
He didn't mention that he hasn't been a kid for a long time, even if he was dying to. "Don't take this the wrong way Reap, but maybe you should try going to see someone. Try and move on from your past your grief."
He wasn't sure that the older man had heard him, until, "Don't wanna move on from it. I deserve to suffer. I told her I'd always protect her. And I couldn't." His voice broke and he could hear the tears in it. "I was twenty when I first met her, my Silvia. Over forty years ago now. The MC was relatively new at that point. I had been riding around town, just enjoying it, ya know. That was when I saw her." He smiled, a sad smile before he continued his story. "She was ripping into a guy who had barged an old lady, knocking her shopping down and all over the place. I just couldn't help myself, I stopped and went over. She had just finished yelling at him when he pushed her and told her to get out of his way. I punched him in the face and told him to pick the nice ladies stuff up. Then I turned to Sil. When I first looked into her eyes, I knew she was it for me. From that moment on I did everything I could to get her to go out with me. And eventually she did, married her within the year. She refused to stop working, even though she didn't need to. Said she wanted to contribute, I let her as it made her happy. Sometimes she would have to miss the club parties though due to working. And most of the time I'd stay sober so I could pick her up, but other times she told me to have fun and she would be fine."
Griff didn't want to stop him, he felt that he needed to talk about this. He wasn't an expert or anything, but he was sure that the man carried a lot of guilt and needed an outlet. "What about the friend you mentioned?"
Reaper gave a bitter laugh, "Marissa? She had always been there, grew up with her. She didn't act any different around us, she was the same as always, she was a sweetie pie. So when Sil said that she was saying stuff to her about a year into our marriage, I dismissed it all. Told her she was probably misunderstanding her. Another year down the line and Sil had left me. When ever I tried to talk to her she avoided me. I didn't understand what had gone wrong, and she wasn't talking to me. She'd moved out, not leaving me a forwarding address. Not left a number to contact her on. She was just gone. Then Marissa started telling me she probably just wanted someone else and didn't know how to tell me. That wasn't my Sil, she would always tell you outright if something was different or wrong, and I told her so. Not long after that Sil's friend turned up, Rita, she just came storming in one day gunning for me."
"Rita?" No way it was the same Rita they all knew, the same Rita who had helped Reap out last week.
"Yeah, the same Rita who's not the type to shy away from blood, who if given a chance will kick your ass and tell you your a cunt if she thinks you need to get your head on straight, was my Sil's best friend. Kinda surprised she didn't kick the shit outta you, if I'm honest." Griff was glad she hadn't, but then again he could have done with someone kicking his ass and not just yelling at him. "She came in here, tore into me, and then met the love of her life." He chuckled. Then turned sad again. "After she told me about the pictures and letters, the snide comments Marissa made when I was out of ear shot. It all made sense. The way Marissa was trying to paint Sil in a bad light. Sil telling me all those things about Marissa I didn't wanna hear. I told Rita I never did anything with Marissa and I never would, as far as I was concerned she had been a friend. Someone always there and never really noticed, but now she was nothing to me. Then Rita told me about the last thing Marissa had said to her." he stopped talking, lifted his glasses and wiped at his eyes.
Clearly this was getting to him, but Griff thought the man needed to get it off his chest. And he didn't think that he had ever just talked about it before. Sure he had people who knew about what had happened, but he didn't think he had ever just talked and had someone listen. Something he clearly was in desperate need of.
"What was it?" he felt fury and sorrow build in his gut at whatever Reaper was going to say next, knowing it wasn't gonna be good.
"The bitch told her I sent her over to kick Sil out. That we were gonna have a fucking baby and I wanted to be with her forever, so Sil needed to get gone. Also told her I didn't wanna see her any more. I felt like ripping the bitch limb from limb at that point. She had convinced my girl that I didn't want her, and that she was having my kid. Impossible as I never fucked her even when I wasn't with Sil. I stormed out of here faster then anyone thought possible, and went to find Silvia. Didn't know it was too late. That I would never see her alive again."
Griff was silent. What the fuck was wrong with some women? He didn't think Reaper was to blame for everything, well except maybe trusting that his friend wasn't a bitch in disguise.
"What did you do to Marissa?" He was against violence towards women, but that bitch deserved it. Especially as she had helped the fucks who killed Silvia.
"I led her to believe that I wanted more with her, then let Rita and Sil's family have her. They were, still are I guess, a pretty deadly family that you just do not wanna cross. I didn't give a shit what they did to her, not after losing my girl and our baby."
Griff sat next to him as he fell silent and drank away his pain. He knew he was blaming himself, and was unlikely to stop. But he also knew that he wasn't really living. He had lost his zest for life the moment he lost his girl.
He couldn't relate in a way. Gin was still alive, yeah she may never be his girl again. But at least she was still alive.
At the moment no one could know what Reaper felt when he lost her, finding her like that after finding out the lie she had been told.
Not really.
And he preyed to whoever was listening that no one ever had to find out.
