YVES

"How's Maki as your boyfriend?" Dad asked casually while we were having breakfast, his voice breaking the comfortable silence of the morning.

I kept my eyes on my plate at nanatili lang akong tahimik but the words echoed in my head, stirring up thoughts I'd rather not confront.

I wanted to say that Maki wasn't my boyfriend, that we never even had that conversation. But the words got stuck in my throat. I don't know when that happened basta nalaman ko na lang na boyfriend ko na siya.

"I want to see him tonight-"

"Excuse me po, baka malate ako sa morning class ko"
I cut him off abruptly, pushing back my chair as I stood up, leaving half of my breakfast untouched. I didn't wait for his response as I made a quick exit from the table.

As I hurried to my room, I heard him mutter something under his breath, the words "Bastos ka" barely reaching my ears. I pretended not to hear, my mind already focused on getting through the day.

Pagkabalik ko sa kwarto ay padabog kung sinara ang pinto and let out a breath. Pumasok na ako sa shower letting the cold water wash away the frustration. The sound of water hitting the tiles drowned out the lingering tension, but it couldn't rinse away the uneasy feeling in my chest.

Even though my class wasn't until 9 AM, I decided to head out early, taking the 30-minute drive to arrive by 7 AM. I texted Ate Aiah to see if siya ay nasa council room na tinatambayan niya rin pag umaagap siya but 20 minutes na wala pa rin siyang reply.

Baka sa library na muna ako tumambay.

I sighed as I parked my car. Just as I was about to step out, my phone rang.

"Sorry hindi ko nabasa yung text mo, may insekto kasing sumalubong sakin eh" bungad ni Ate Aiah na halatang may inis sa kanyang boses.

I couldn't help but chuckle, already picturing her annoyed face.

"Why were you asking if I was in the council office?" she asked curiously.

"Pupunta sana ako, magpapalamig ng ulo" I replied, trying to sound casual.

"Nag away nanaman kayo ng daddy mo?" nag aalalang tanong ni Ate Aiah

"Ewan ko ba sa kanya, He keeps pushing Maki on me" gigil kong sumbong

"Come here, let's talk about it," Ate Aiah suggested.

Pababa na ako ng kotse when I heard her clear her throat on the other line.

"Are you still in the parking lot? Can you do me a favor before you come here?" she asked.

"Sure Ate, Ano ba yun?"

"Can you order me a coffee?" she said.

"Coffee? Akala ko ba you don't want a coffee cause it's remind of her?" I teased lightly, referring to someone I knew she was avoiding thoughts of.

"Pampagising lang, Loi. I got here super early, and I didn't sleep at all last night," she admitted, sounding more tired than annoyed now.

"Okiiii, Meron ba non sa canteen?" I asked, scanning the area as I stepped out of the car.

"No, no. Sa coffee sanc ka umorder sa tapat lang ng school yun." she instructed.

"This is my first time na umorder Ate Aiah"

I heard her laugh on the other line. "Just tell the counter you want one Peppermint Hot Chocolate for takeout. They'll give you a slip, and you can find a seat while you wait. Got it?"
