YVES
"Kanina pa kaya kita tinatawag" it's Mikha.
"Sorry, may binabasa kasi ako kaya hindi kita narinig. Ano bang atin, Mikhs?" I asked as we walked together towards the elevator.
"Nico didn't come earlier." she replied with a frown. "She said she had something to do." she added, frustration evident in her voice.
"Akala ko ba nandoon na siya?" I questioned, raising an eyebrow as we stepped into the elevator.
"That's what she said! She made me wait for an hour tapos hindi pala siya pupunta" she ranted, her arms crossing over her chest in annoyance.
"Baka naman nagka-emergency lang. Kalma ka lang" I suggested, trying to calm her down.
She let out a small, frustrated "tsk," crossing her arms over her chest as the elevator doors closed.
"Business Ad din ba course mo?" I asked, quickly changing the topic. I could see from the reflection in the elevator doors that she was still upset.
She shook her head. "No, I was just returning something to a friend."
"Ahh, Ano ba course mo?" I continued, genuinely curious.
"C.E" she said softly. "I'm just continuing my dada's dream." she answered, her voice suddenly taking on a sad tone.
"Bakit? Where's your dada ba?" I asked, turning to face her as the elevator hummed softly.
"Sabi ni Mom, he's dead na daw before I was born," she sighed deeply, a sadness clouding her eyes. "Maybe that's why I don't have any memories of being with him."
Without thinking, I reached out and placed my hand gently on her back, rubbing it in a soothing motion. "I'm really sorry to hear that, Mikhs."
She gave a small, sad smile. "Minsan nga, I wonder if this is really what I want? or Is it for him.. Parang it's my way of keeping him close, kahit na hindi ko siya nakilala."
"You're doing great, you know? Your dada would be so proud of you" I said sincerely, trying to lift her spirits.
"Thanks, Loi. Minsan lang talaga, it feels heavy." she admitted, her eyes looking anywhere but at me, as if she was lost in thought. "There's an emptiness in my life, that I can't remember Loi"
I hugged her para mabawasan ang sakit na nararamdaman niya.
Hindi ko alam na may gantong side pala siya.
The elevator dinged as we reached our floor, and the doors opened.
"What's your plan for today?" she asked as we stepped out of the elevator and headed toward the parking lot.
"Lunch" I replied.
"With?"
"Me, myself and I" natatawang sagot ko trying to make light of the situation.
I heard her chuckled, ang deep din katulad ng boses niya. I guess okay na siya.
"You'll go with me" she said firmly "Remember I promised to make libre you? Today's the day I treat you."
I was about to complain ng akbayan niya ako.
"I don't take no as an answer, Loi"
We walked towards the parking lot, our footsteps echoing in the quiet space. As we reached her car, she unlocked it and opened the door for me.
What a gentlewoman.
"So, Where are we going?" I asked as I slid into the passenger seat.
___
She was excited to try a new restaurant, and luckily, there was a recently opened place near the school.
As we settled into our seats, Mikhs glanced around with a curious look. "Did the owner really put that much thought into the name of this restaurant? Where did the idea for 'CASH'E VILLE' come from?" she asked, her curiosity clear in her tone.
"It's like a random word" she added, almost a whispered.
I couldn't help but chuckle. "Alam mo, medyo judgmental ka" sagot ko rin ng pabulong dahil may kasama kaming waiter who was guiding us to our table.
She shrugged with a playful grin. "I'm just curious, you know."
Matapos kami ihatid ng waiter sa table, a new waiter arrived with the menus. Mikhs immediately opened hers with a determined look.
"What do you want to eat?" she asked habang nasa menu lang ang tingin niya.
I scan the menu card tsaka lumingon ulit sa kanya "Ikaw na bahala"
She nod at tinawag ang waiter.
"We'll have three Beef Wellingtons, two orders of Truffle Risotto, four Lobster Bisques, a dozen Seared Scallops, and two Roasted Duck Breasts. And make sure to get a few extra sides of garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed green beans" Mikhs said decisively, eyeing the menu with a smile.
"Hoy! Mikhs ang dami naman nyan, dalawa lang tayong kakain" saway ko dahil pang isang pamilya ang inoorder nya.
She looked at me with a reassuring smile. "It's okay, Loi. My teammates are joining us soon, so whatever we don't finish will go to them," she explained, continuing to place her order.
After she finished, the waiter took our order and left us to chat while we waited.
"Anak ka ba ng governor? grabe ka manlibre" I said with a laugh.
She shook her head, a playful smile on her lips. "Nope, but I am the apo of the owner of our school."
I almost choked on my drink, my eyes widening in surprise. "Ikaw yung transferre?" I asked, covering my mouth with my hand and pointing at her in disbelief.
"Yeah? but let's keep it a secret between us, okay? Just you and Pres Jhoanna know" she said and make a "shh" gesture with her finger.
Muntik pa akong matawa dahil nakwento na yon ni Jho samin last time kung hindi ako nagkakamali.
"Ha? bakit ayaw mong ipaalam?" nagtatakang tanong ko.
She sighed "I want to be treated like a normal student. I don't want special treatment just because I'm the granddaughter."
Her answer made me smile. She had a point, and I could see how someone in her position might end up
abusuhin or maging mapagmataas ang tingin sa kanilang sarili.Just a few minutes later, our food arrived. It made sense now kaya pala long table ang hinanap nitong si Mikha.
As we ate in silence, her volleyball teammates started arriving. She glanced at me and then moved to sit next to me.
Yung iba nakikilala ko dahil minsan na rin akong nanood ng laban nila. Pero pinakilala pa rin ako ni Mikhs.
"Nice to meet you, Loi" Krishna said warmly, offering her hand.
"Same here," I replied with a small smile at nakipagshakehand.
At sumunod din yung iba. Their energy was different-intense but welcoming.
"Do you want to move to a table for two?" she asked, her tone filled with concern.
"Gaga ka, hindi na" pinalo ko pa ng mahina ang braso niya.
Naramdaman niya siguro yung pagtahimik ko.
Sino ba kasing hindi tatahimik pag hindi makarelate sa volleyball, nakakahiya naman magfeeling na may alam diba.
"Cr muna ako" bulong ko kay Mikha.
"Samahan na kita" Mikhs offered.
"Kaya ko na, mabilis lang ako" I said, giving her a reassuring smile.
As I walked away, I could hear the murmur of their conversation getting louder, and I felt a sense of relief as I headed toward the restroom.
