YVES

As the city lights started to come into view, I realized how quickly time had passed. We were already back in the city, heading towards our subdivision. She was focused on the road, driving smoothly, her phone propped up for navigation.

"Why don't we just head over to your condo instead?" I suggested.

She glanced at me, a knowing look flashing in her eyes, and shook her head.

"Hindi na, magco-commute na lang ako pauwi." she insisted.

As much as I wanted to convince her otherwise, I knew better than to push it.

"Okay, you're the boss." I finally said with a defeated sigh, raising my hands in surrender.

Alam ko naman na once she's made up her mind, I couldn't win against her in anything even the smallest debates.

Silence fell over us for a few moments, but it wasn't uncomfortable. I took the chance to just watch her, the way her fingers lightly drummed against the steering wheel, her profile illuminated by the soft city lights.

Ewan ko ba. Sa bawat minuto na kasama ko siya, mas lalo akong nahuhulog.

--

I could already see the gate of the subdivision. Parang biglang bumigat ang pakiramdam ko.

As we approached, three security guards blocked our way.

Kailan pa naging tatlo ang nagbabantay dito?

She glanced at me bago binuksan ang bintana sa tapat niya.

"Ma'am Yves, ikaw po pala. Kahapon pa po kayo hinahanap ng daddy n'yo." one of the guards said with a polite nod.

I nodded back, forcing a small smile. Ramdam ko na tinanggal na ni Uyab ang seatbelt niya.

"You don't really want me to take you home muna?" I asked, my voice barely hiding the hesitation.

She shook her head, tapos tumingin sa akin. "Mag usap na muna kayo ng daddy mo." she said softly, her eyes lingering on mine like she's telling me something more than her words.

I sighed, nodding, knowing na wala talaga akong laban. "Thank you for bringing me to Small Town." I said, reaching for her hand.

I smiled at her, trying to convey how much this day meant to me. "I really had fun." I said, squeezing it gently, hoping she could see the seriousness in my eyes.

She smiled at me, and just as she was about to say something, a loud honk interrupted the moment.

Startled, we both turned towards the sound of the car behind us. She glanced back at me with that same calm look.

"I need to go." she said in a hurry, gently caressing my hand bago niya binitawan ito.

The moment she closed the door behind her, it felt like the air had been knocked out of me.

With a sigh, I moved over to the driver's seat.

"You"

That voice is coming from my father.

Napatingin ako sa bintana, at nakita ko ang walang-emosyong titig ni Daddy kay Uyab, na tahimik na nakatayo sa harap niya.

"You're the disrespectful waitress from CASH'E VILLE" mariing sabi ni Daddy, pointing a finger at her like she was something beneath him.

My blood boiled. "Dad, don't talk to her like that!" I shouted, hastily stepping out of the car.

Kita ko kung paano lumingon si Daddy sa akin, before turning back to Uyab with an even colder expression.
