The morning had started peacefully

The morning had started peacefully.

I rarely had the time to prepare breakfast, but today was different.

It was Sunday, a rare day off from my hospital duties, so I thought I’d do something special for Mom and Dad.

I’d never made South Indian cuisine before, but I wanted to try something new for them—Idli, Sambhar, and Uttapam.

I knew they’d appreciate the effort, and I enjoyed the process of putting it all together.

As I served the food, Dad looked at me with a warm smile.

"Beta, eat with us," he said, his tone filled with fatherly care.

I nodded, feeling a sense of belonging that had become familiar over the past week.

Mom then asked,

"Where’s my little Veer?"
Her voice held a touch of affection, as always.

"She’s still sleeping," I replied, smiling.

The conversation flowed easily after that, a gentle rhythm of words and laughter that made me feel completely at ease.

In just one week, they had started treating me like their own daughter. It was comforting, a warmth I hadn’t known I needed until I felt it.

But then, the sound of footsteps from the main door interrupted our moment.

Dad immediately stood up, followed by Mom. The sudden change in the atmosphere made me rise from my seat too.

A girl, about my age, walked in. She rushed to Dad and hugged him, then moved on to embrace Mom with the same enthusiasm.

Her eyes then found mine, and I barely had time to react before she was in front of me, wrapping her arms around me with surprising strength.

Before I could say anything, she lifted me off the ground and spun me around, her voice ringing with joy as she yelled,

"Bhabhi!"

My head spun in more ways than one.

"Put me down, please," I managed to say, my voice tinged with a mix of dizziness and panic.

But she didn’t stop. She was strong—much stronger than I expected—and her joy was infectious, though I felt more like I was on the verge of fainting than celebrating.

Then, cutting through the chaos, I heard a voice that sent a shiver down my spine.

"Saanvi!" It was Mr. Rajvansh, his tone sharp with authority.
