THE TREES ABOVE LILIA rustled in the cold breeze, but she hardly noticed. The girl had been on her own for several hours now, and all she could think about was staying alive. One cannon had sounded since the feast at the Cornucopia, signaling the death of another tribute, but something in her gut told her that it wasn't him.
It couldn't have been. Could it? Had he been so hurt by Lilia that he let himself get killed? Had Thresh hunted him down and finished him off? No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't stop these horrid thoughts racing through her mind.
As Lilia moved carefully through the forest, she aimed to set up camp back at the river, where she had previously resided the past two days.
When arriving to her camp, the girl paused to drink from her water bottle, quenching her dry throat. But, it did nothing to calm her racing thoughts. Adrian is dead because of Clove. Clove killed him. And Cato knew. She clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms.
How could she have been so blind?
At nightfall, the temperature dropped drastically. The girl shivered as she began to feel the cold numb her body. Thankfully, she'd been gifted a thick blanket at the Cornucopia earlier that day, so she was able to warm herself with the fabric around her shoulders.
After getting settled, Lilia listened to the distant sound of mockingjays, signing in the moonlight. Comforted by the song, the girl lay down on her sleeping bag, and began to drift to sleep.
However, she was quickly awaked by a series of loud screams, echoing through the trees. Lilia froze. Thresh.
Standing upright, the girl quickly tried to locate where the scream had come from. Lilia's eyes darted around, but she couldn't see anything in the darkness. As the screaming stopped, the forest grew quiet once again, but something didn't feel right.
And then, she saw them, moving slowly through the trees like dark shadows. Muttations. A pack of them, and they were heading straight toward her.
Gasping in panic, Lilia turned and ran, completely ignoring her supplies. She didn't have time to think. All she knew was that she had to get away from those horrid beasts. As she pushed through the leaves, she could hear their barks echoing in the distance.
Lilia's mind quickly raced, thinking of all the places she could go. She knew she needed to get to high ground if she wanted to stand a chance against them. Then, it hit her.
The Cornucopia.
As she ran, Lilia didn't dare look back. She didn't know how far the mutts were from her, but she knew she had a good chance at getting to the Cornucopia safely. As soon as she burst into the clearing, her eyes locked onto the metal structure in the center. Without slowing, she sprinted toward it, the sound of the mutts growing louder and louder.
