FOR THE NEXT half hour, the group trudged through the wilderness, exhausted, dripping with sweat. The air was hot, thick, and miserable as it clung to their skin. Lilia wiped her eyebrow and kept her eyes on Peeta's back as they moved upwards.

Suddenly, without warning, there was a loud snap, and a flash of blinding light.

Before Lilia could react, Peeta flew backward and slammed into her, his weight knocking her off her feet. Her head hit the ground hard, pain shooting through her skull.

"Peeta!" Katniss screamed, her voice filled with panic. "Peeta!"

Lilia blinked, forcing herself to sit up. Her head throbbed, but she could tell she wasn't seriously hurt. She shook her head, trying to focus, when she heard Katniss again.

"Peeta, no! Peeta!"

Slowly, her eyes focused forward, where Peeta lay motionless on the ground.

"Peeta..." Lilia whispered, her breath catching in her throat.

Before she could move, Cato knelt beside her, gripping her shoulders, his eyes scanning her body for injuries.

"Lilia, are you okay?" he asked, brushing her wet hair out of her face.

"I'm fine," she managed to say, her head still spinning. "I'm okay."

Katniss dropped to her knees beside Peeta, her hands frantically shaking him, her voice rising in desperation. "Peeta! Wake up! Peeta!"

After taking a moment to make sure Lilia was alright, Finnick Odair moved quickly to Peeta's side, his expression serious.

"Move," he ordered Katniss.

Katniss stumbled back, her eyes wide with horror as Finnick leaned over Peeta, his fingers pressing against his neck, searching for a pulse. The boy then began chest compressions, his hands moving with ease, pumping against Peeta's chest.

From the corner of her eye, Lilia could see Katniss begin to draw her bow. In an instant, Lilia grabbed the bow out of her hands and shouted at her, "What the hell are you doing?"

"He's killing him!" Katniss shrieked.

"He's already dead!" Lilia shouted back. "Finnick is trying to save him!"

"Come on, Peeta," Finnick muttered under his breath, continuing the compressions.

Finally understanding what the boy was doing, Katniss nodded and retrieved her bow, setting it at her side.

Lilia struggled to her feet, her head still aching, but she couldn't stay still. She glanced at Cato, who remained at her side, his hand gripping her arm as if he were afraid she'd fall again.
