——☆ FIRE ON FIRE
chapter twenty-four: victory tour
THE TRAIN SLOWED to a stop in District 11, the first stop on the Victory Tour. Lilia's breath caught in her throat as she stepped out the doors, coming face to face with a line of Peacekeepers waiting outside. Without a word, they guided her toward the Justice Building, where the Victors would be held before the speeches.Selene sighed at the dull atmosphere, "Well, it's not as festive as I'd hoped, but we'll have to make the best of it!"
As the group walked past the train tracks and toward the large building, Lilia made sure to remain composed. Luckily, with Finnick at her side, she found it easy to do. Before stepping indoors, one of the attendants placed a microphone on her dress.
"Make sure to flash them a big smile," Finnick whispered to her.
Nodding once, Lilia and her team were ushered through the large doors and into the Justice Building, which was filled with twice as many people than she was expecting. Nonetheless, the blonde girl flashed a pretty smile, waving to the cameras.
Once they were finished, Lilia took a moment to search the room for familiar faces. In the right corner, Katniss, Peeta, Haymitch, and their Capitol attendant, Effie Trinket, stood together in conversation. They had not yet noticed her arrival.
When Lilia's gaze shifted to the other side of the room, and a silent gasp escaped her mouth. There he was, Cato Hadley, standing with his team just a few feet away from her.
The boy was just as she remembered. He was tall, muscular, broad-shouldered, his presence authoritative without having to say a word. She remembered those deep blue eyes, and that golden blonde hair, which was slightly longer now.
For a moment, Lilia stared at him, but before she could gather her thoughts, Selene's voice cut through the silence.
"Hello, everyone!" she called, drawing everyone's attention. "We have arrived!"
At the sound, Effie Trinket's face lit up, and she quickly made her way over to the group. "Selene, darling! It's so good to see you!"
Lilia forced a polite smile as the two women exchanged conversation, but her mind remained elsewhere.
Slowly, she glanced back at Cato, whose eyes were now locked on hers. The boy's hand twitched at his side, like he wanted to reach out to her, but wasn't sure if he should.
Lilia opened her mouth to say something, but before she could find the words, the mayor of District 11 appeared at their side.
"It's time," he announced in a formal tone.
The anthem began to play through the speakers as applause sounded from outside. Before leaving, Effie Trinket handed a card to each of the Victors with a smile.
