——☆ FIRE ON FIRE
chapter forty-six: the star squad
THE HOVERCRAFT HUMMED quietly as it flew through the evening air, heading straight for the rebel base in the Capitol. Inside the cabin, Lilia Conway sat harnessed into her seat, dressed in black attire, with knives and weapons strapped to her arms and legs. She was a soldier now. A fighter."Fifteen minutes until landing..."
Unlike the others, who couldn't sit still, Cato Hadley didn't move or shift in his seat. Since he was raised in District Two where soldiers were molded from birth, he was raised for this. Fighting didn't faze him the way it did the others.
It didn't faze him the way it did Lilia.
As if sensing her unease, the boy glanced at her, his sharp blue eyes focusing down to her trembling hands. Without a word, he reached out and placed his strong, calloused hand over hers.
"You need to breathe," Cato whispered.
Looking up at him, Lilia nodded and let out a breath. "Thanks for reminding me."
Despite the tough exterior she managed to gain throughout her experience in the Games, deep down, she was still just a girl. A girl who had seen too much death, who had been tortured and stripped from her old life, who had been forced to survive.
"Stay close to me when we land," Cato said, keeping his hand over hers.
"What else would I do?" Lilia replied smartly, trying to ease her nerves. "I wouldnt last ten minutes without you."
"I don't know about that, you seemed to be doing just fine that first year in the Games," Cato replied, thinking back on the memory. "And you left me twice."
"Okay smart guy," Lilia replied.
"Just don't go leaving me again."
"I'm not going anywhere."
"Landing in ten minutes, get ready," a voice on the intercom spoke.
Lilia exhaled as the hovercraft lowered toward their base, hidden in the outskirts of the Capitol. The bright lights of the city glowed in the distance, reminding her of what was to come. She could almost feel President Snow's eyes staring into her from his mansion.
As the craft touched down, the squad unbuckled their harnesses in unison. Lilia stood, grabbing her gear, and making her way to the exit. The door hissed open, and a blast of cold air rushed into the cabin.
"Let's move," Boggs, their squad leader, ordered as he stepped off the hovercraft.
Lilia followed, her boots crunching softly on the gravel beneath them. The base was scattered with tents, supply crates, weaponry, and other miscellaneous items. Soldiers and rebels moved around them, unloading supplies and checking equipment.
