Fake? Lumian raised his right eyebrow slightly, as if he heard destiny's merciless mockery of Charlie.
Charlie had abandoned his already fragile principles, slept with Mrs. Alice for a few days, got entangled in a murder case, lost his job as an apprentice waiter, all for a fake diamond necklace?
For some reason, Lumian suddenly felt an urge not to surrender to fate so easily.
Although this wasn't his issue, he felt a certain empathy.
To hell with fate!
If you mock me, I'll mock you back, challenge you!
In that moment, Lumian vaguely grasped another role-playing rule of the "Provocateur," but it was still crude and not accurate enough.
He looked at Charlie and pondered for a moment before asking, "Do you think it was Mrs. Alice who deceived you, or was it the pawnshop staff who saw you down on your luck, assumed you couldn't tell the necklace was fake, and deliberately gave you a low appraisal?"
"I... I don't know." Charlie was filled with confusion and pain.
After a pause, he added with difficulty, "I suspect it was Mrs. Alice. Look, so many people come here to pawn items; the appraiser handles dozens or even hundreds of things each day, many of which are valuable. It's unlikely they'd only cheat me, right? How could she..."
Charlie couldn't finish his sentence.
So the pawnshop isn't allowed to deceive everyone equally? They push the prices down as much as they can, and the more valuable the item, the more they push? Lumian inwardly chuckled and said with a laugh, "Why not? Many rich people don't get wealthy through kindness and hard work. If they can fool you with a fake, why give you the real thing?"
"Maybe Mrs. Alice is that kind of rich person, or perhaps not that wealthy, just living in the White Swan Hotel to trick young men like you."
Lumian didn't deny that there were wealthy people who made their fortune through talent, hard work, or opportunity, such as Auror.
After being teased by Lumian, Charlie's facial muscles visibly twisted.
He muttered angrily to himself, "Yeah, this whole time, Mrs. Alice never took me out for a fancy meal, always just called me to her room for service at seven or eight in the evening..."
You're so easily fooled. Are you really a Limurian? Lumian couldn't help but cover his face with his hand.
He then stood up and said, "Get the necklace back, and let's try another pawnshop."
"What if it's real?"
Charlie was stunned for a moment and said, "Okay, okay!"
He wasn't willing to give up either.
Lumian reminded him again, "Make sure they don't swap the necklace."
"Yeah." Charlie tried to pull himself together. "I've been looking at that necklace every day for a while now; I've memorized every detail!"
After getting the diamond necklace back, Lumian accompanied Charlie to two other pawnshops in the Observatory District.
The appraisal results were the same as before: the necklace was fake and could only fetch 11-15 verlkin.
Charlie grew increasingly depressed, increasingly desperate.
Lumian glanced at him and comforted him, "At least it can still get you a dozen or so verlkin, enough to last you more than a week, and you'll have some spare money to take a waiter from Whitecoat Street's café for a drink and get them to introduce you to a new job."
