The hum of the office was a comforting backdrop as you settled into your morning routine. The holiday break had been a welcome respite, but now it was back to business as usual. You were in the middle of sorting through the latest batch of client files when your phone buzzed with a text message.

Jenna: Hey, just checking in. Are you at the office today?

You smiled at the message, touched by the thoughtfulness. It wasn't uncommon for Jenna to keep tabs on you the last few days, but today, her timing seemed particularly thoughtful.

You: Morning! Yes, I'm here. Just getting things in order. How's your day shaping up?

As you set your phone down, you returned to organizing your desk, mentally preparing for the day ahead.

Hailee walked into your office with her usual efficiency. She flashed you a quick smile before glancing down at her clipboard.

"Good morning, boss!" Hailee said cheerfully. "Happy New Year!"

You looked up and returned her smile. "Morning, Hailee! Happy New Year to you too. How was your break?"

She leaned against the doorframe with a relaxed smile. "It was great, thanks. Spent some time catching up with friends and family. How about you? Did you do anything exciting for the holidays?"

You shook your head with a chuckle. "Not too much, just some quiet time with friends. It was nice to have a bit of a break, though."

A little lie wouldn't hurt.

"Sounds lovely," Hailee said, her tone genuinely warm. "I'm glad to hear you had some downtime. It's always good to recharge."

"Definitely," you agreed. "It's nice to be back and get into the swing of things. I see you're bright and early—ready to kick off the new year?"

Hailee nodded, her eyes twinkling. "Absolutely. Looking forward to making this year great."

Before you could continue the conversation, your phone buzzed again with a new message.

Jenna: Glad to hear you're at work. ;)

You chuckled softly to yourself, not quite understanding what her answer meant. As you set your phone down, you prepared for the day ahead.

Meanwhile, Hailee glanced at her watch and gave you a friendly nod. "Well, I'll let you get back to it. If you need anything, just holler."

"Thanks, Hailee. I will," you said, watching as she turned to head back to her desk.

You focused your attention on your computer screen to check your to dos for the day. It was always messy the day after returning from holidays break.

Not long after, Hailee reappeared at your office door knocking to grab your attention.

"You've got a visitor."

You looked up, confused. "A visitor? Who is it?"

Hailee's lips curved into a smile. "There's a Miss Marie here to see you."

Your heart skipped a beat as you considered who it might be. As the boss, dealing with unexpected and unscheduled visits wasn't exactly your forte.

Could it be Jenna? What was she doing at the office? She never came by. Considering her text minutes later, it was suspicious.

You definitely weren't expecting this.

You stood up and smoothed out your clothes, trying to compose yourself. "Thanks, Hailee. I'll see her now."
