“What?” He stared at her as she burst into another field of tears, but he was filled with confusion.

“I need to let her know, or else I'll never be at peace.” She continued sobbing.

“Would you please tell me in detail what you mean?” He ensured to keep his tone steady, though his insides were blowing up.

Reil had said her family didn't have any contact with her mom.

That her mom had just left her without bothering to come back. So what on earth had happened?

What was Ivy saying about being the cause of Reil's mom's death?

She took in a few deep breaths. “Did Reil ever tell you anything about me being a little unnice to her growing up?”

He nodded. “She told me a few things about you not really liking her because she was a product of Sean's—” he didn't know if it was right using the word ‘unfaithfulness’ in her presence.

She let out a muffled sound that was meant to sound like a snicker. “It was way worse than not really liking her.”

He'd suspected that, because if Reil was just below seven years and she still recalled it all, then it must've been a terrible experience.

But what did it have to do with Reil's mom? And death?

Reil's mom was dead? And according to what Ivy had said, she was the cause. How?

“When I got married to Sean,” she took in a deep breath before continuing, “I had this beat friend, Hazel,”

Okay…

“I met Hazel when I went on a trip to Australia, and since she was poor, I decided to bring her to America.”

“I didn't really treat her as a friend, though I tried to convince myself that that was what we were, but I was mostly using her when I needed her.”

She sighed, “Hazel was really poor and so whenever she needed money and asked for it from me, I won't give her till I got something in return.”

“Then I had Bale, and felt really superior to her as she didn't even have a boyfriend though she had tons of guys drooling over her as she was really beautiful.”

She sniffed in.

He wanted to ask why she didn't have a boyfriend when she was so beautiful.

Who knows, maybe one of the boyfriend's could've helped her financially.

Like she could listen to his thoughts, she said, “I wanted to feel superior to her so I decided to make sure that if she wanted more money from me, she shouldn't have a boyfriend.”

Gosh, that was mean.

“And then one day, I realized that her sister, Hailey, was really ill and needed money for surgery,” she shook her head as though disappointed in herself.

“She came to meet me for help, but I told her that I was tired and would get back to her later.” She went silent for a moment, “all I wanted to do was to just tease her for a while then send her the money.

“But she never asked for the money again and I didn't see or hear a thing from her for a long time, probably a year.”

He could already guess the next part before she said it.

“Then she came back with a child.” She sighed in exhaustion, “apparently, she'd met Sean for the money since I didn't give it to her and he'd said he'd give it to her if she had sex with him, but dude forgot protection.”

“I was very devastated and annoyed, so I ensured she went back to Australia but she promised to never come back if we could give Reil a good life.”

“Sean accepted that since it was his child.”

He nodded, but what he was really eager to know was how it was related to Hazel dying.

“Then every once in a while since Reil began staying with us, Hazel would call to plead with me to bring Reil to her so she could see how much her daughter had grown.

“She'd plead with me to send a picture of Reil, but I didn't since I wanted never seeing her child grow to be a punishment for what she did.”

“And then, when all the pestering didn't seem like it'd die down anytime soon,” he prepared himself for the worst side of the story.

“I went to Australia to talk to her and all I planned to do was cuss her and tell her to never come back.”

“But then she knelt down and started pleading with me to let her see her daughter once.” She became shaky like she was recalling the scene.

“I screamed at her, cussed her, kicked her and pushed her off me like she was a mad dog instead of a mother that just wanted her child.

“Then, I left, but she was following me, pleading with me to just let her talk to her child.” She sniffed in.

“If I'd just said yes, she wouldn't have died.” Then, she started crying again, but he was eager to know the whole thing.

“What happened then?” He asked, as he watched her shoulders shake.

“We were both crossing the road and she was in a hurry to meet me, she didn't even check, then some crazy driver ran her over.”

Her skin became pale.

That was terrible. So Reil's mom was actually dead and not the mean woman Reil had assumed her to be by never visiting her once.

“I've felt guilty since then,” she said through the tears, “and since I was the reason Reil doesn't have a mom, I decided to try my best to be the best mom for her.”

He reached for her hand. “If you want to be the best mom for her, I think you should start by telling her the truth.”

She nodded. “I want to, I really do,” the tears were pouring down her face like rivers, “but I'm afraid of how she'll take it.”

“She might not take it really well, but she deserves to know,” which was very true, “and it'll also relieve a huge burden off you.”

“It will.” She whispered.

After she was done crying and had dried her face with his handkerchief, she stared at him.

“Please don't tell her.” Her eyes were pleading with him.

“I don't want to keep any secrets from her anymore.” He watched as the colors drained from her skin even more.

“Please.”

“But I won't tell her if you tell her soon, or else she'll have to find out from me.”

She nodded. “I'll tell her soon, I don't think I can keep it in me anymore.”

He nodded, then turned to the waitress who had not come to interrupt them throughout.

She was wiping the tears from her face. Had she been listening to their conversation?

That was the disadvantage of small coffee shops. They never have standard rules.

If it was some huge hotel, he could have sued them for listening to their conversation, but what was the use when the girl probably didn't have quarter the money he'd sue her with.

But at the moment, he needed to think about how Reil would take it all.

Her mom was dead and was not what Ivy had said she was.

Wow.
