As soon as we walked into the driveway of the Park's hoyse, I noticed something strange. Sunoo’s car was already parked, and I saw the top of Jungwon’s head through the back window.
It wasn’t unusual for them to hang out, but something about today felt… different. The moment Jiyoo and I stepped into the lawn, the front door swung open, and out bounded Jay and Sunghoon, looking oddly energetic.
Jay, with a grin plastered on his face, jogged toward us. “Perfect timing, Ni-ki! We're all set for the road trip.”
I blinked in confusion. “Road trip?”
Sunghoon nodded enthusiastically, holding up a paper Sunoo had given him. “Sunoo’s been planning this for weeks, and we figured now was the perfect time. I mean, why stay home when we could all go have some fun, right?”
I glanced over at Sunoo, who was leaning casually against the car with his arms crossed, but there was something a bit too smug about the way he was grinning.
Jungwon sat in the backseat, already munching on snacks, giving me a lazy wave when our eyes met.
“Oh, come on. You didn’t hear?” Sunoo’s voice had this teasing edge to it. “Jay and Sunghoon went all out. They practically bought everything on my list!”
I glanced at Jay and Sunghoon, who were packing bags into the trunk, way too excited for this trip. It clicked right then—their eagerness had nothing to do with Sunoo’s plans.
This wasn’t just about a road trip; it was about getting Jiyoo away from the house, away from Heeseung and the new family dynamic. And judging by the way Jay kept glancing at Jiyoo, I had a feeling it was mostly for her benefit.
Jiyoo didn’t seem to notice the odd behavior. She looked thrilled about the idea of a spontaneous trip.
“We’re going camping?” she asked, her eyes wide with excitement.
Sunghoon grinned, slinging an arm around her shoulders. “Yep, nearest national park. It’s gonna be great. We’ve got everything covered—tent, food, even a first aid kit. Just us, nature, and no distractions.”
I rolled my eyes at how they were acting, like two dads trying way too hard to seem cool. But I couldn’t deny that the idea of getting away for a bit sounded nice.
And the thought of spending time with Jiyoo, Sunoo, and Jungwon without any of the tension surrounding her dad… yeah, that sounded perfect.
“Fine,” I said, shaking my head but smiling. “But I’m driving.”
The drive was peaceful.
Well, as peaceful as it could be with Sunoo and Jungwon in the backseat, already diving into their stash of snacks. Maeumi, Jungwon's dog, sat between them, his little tail wagging excitedly. Sunoo was feeding him bits of crackers while Jungwon was setting up the playlist on the car’s speakers.
Jiyoo sat beside me in the front seat, her window rolled down, the wind messing with her hair, but she didn’t seem to care.
She was smiling, humming along to whatever song was playing, and every now and then, she’d sneak a glance at Maeumi and laugh when the dog made a funny face.
As we drove, I kept one hand on the steering wheel and the other resting near the gear shift, stealing glances at her whenever I could. It was just us now—me, her, and our friends.
No Heeseung, no Jiwoo, no dad issues hanging in the air. Just the four of us.
“You okay?” I asked her after a while, noticing how quiet she had gotten.
