Chapter thirty nine

"Went exactly as you'd expect."

Making it to ocean harbor, Jeremiah drove in as he parked the car, him and Diana got out of it, as they turned around, walking to the motel rooms behind them "all right." Jeremiah said "are you a hundred percent sure we should do this? Because we still have time to get in the car and turn back." Diana shared "we got this." Jeremiah shared "okay." Diana told him, as the two walked up the stairs, all the way up to the top floor, they turned heading all the way down to the last room, Jeremiah sighed "okay." he said, as he knocked on the door, it opened right away revealing a women that other then blonde hair which was curled she looked nothing like Susannah "can I help you?" Julia asked.

"Aunt Julia. Oh, my god!" Jeremiah voiced, stepping forward and hugging her, he chuckled, while Diana noticed how uncomfortable Julia was especially as she didn't hug him back, Jeremiah pulled away  "uh, um, Conrad told me you were here. It's..it's been so long. Just wanted to say hi." he shared "Jeremiah." Julia said "yeah." Jeremiah told her, as Julia looked to Diana "and.." she said "Diana Conklin. One of Laurel Park's daughter's, Susannah's best friend." Diana shared "right. Sorry. Wow. It's been so long." Julia said "yeah." Jeremiah said, as Julia looked to him "you've really got my dad's eyes." she shared.

And with the way she said it, Diana wasn't so sure that was a good thing "uh, I got these hydrangeas for you from my mom's garden." Jeremiah shared, taking the flowers from Diana "oh." Julia said, and just like Diana thought she didn't like the flowers either "I was just wondering if we could have a second to talk." Jeremiah shared "is this about the house?" Julia asked "yeah." Jeremiah told her, chuckling "I'm sorry but I've decided to move ahead with the sale. Actually, we're..we're gonna have an open house tomorrow." Julia shared "oh." Jeremiah said, as all that charm he wanted to put on fell just like that.

As Diana chuckled "look, Julia I know it's been awhile like you said but the house meant everything to Susannah and even more so now to Jeremiah and Conrad and me and my family now that she's gone. I'm sure you've spent some time there too, right?" she asked "a few years, yeah." Julia told her "then why would you wanna get rid of it? I mean Susannah always said it was.." Diana shared "magical? Yeah I remember Susannah calling it that." Julia shared, interrupting her as she put her hand on her hip.

"You know, I..I don't understand how you can just get rid of something your sister loved so much. I mean, it's kind of a.." Jeremiah said "it's not personal." Julia told him, interrupting him to "yeah, I bet." Jeremiah told her "are you suggesting that I gift the house to you?" Julia asked "well, you clearly don't want it." Diana said at the same time as Jeremiah said "I mean, it is ours." where Diana stared at her while Jeremiah looked away taking a deep breath "then I..I think you and your brother should sort this out with your dad. I'm certain that you have the resources," Julia shared.

As Jeremiah looked back at her "but I can't put off a sale while I wait for you to get your ducks in a row. I have to be back at work in a week. I barely got the time off as it is." Julia shared "so that's why you didn't make it to the funeral?" Jeremiah asked "something like that." Julia told him "mom?" a girl with short hair and dressed in boys clothes asked as she walked up "yeah." Julia said, turning to her "hi." she said "Jeremiah?" the girl asked with furrowed brows "Skye? I..I didn't know you were here." Jeremiah shared, looking from her to Diana "this is Diana. Um, her mom and mine were best friends." he shared.

"I thought you were working on the virtual tour of the open house?" Julia asked Skye "oh, I..I just finished that, so.." Skye shared "okay. Let's eat." Julia told her, as she turned back to Jeremiah and Diana "thanks for stopping by." she said "of course. Don't forget your flowers." Jeremiah shared, holding them out to her to make sure she took them "oh. Thanks." Julia said, as her and Skye stepped back into the apartment "yeah, you should get those." Jeremiah told her, Skye waved "bye." Diana said, forcing a smile as she waved back "have a, have a good rest of your day." Jeremiah shared, as the door was closed on their face.

The two had then gotten back in the jeep and were driving back home "we should really pick up groceries before we go back or Conrad might kill us." Diana shared, trying to strike up conversation amongst the dead silence, knowing Jeremiah's mood was down, but he didn't laugh or say anything in agreement as she turned looking at him "look I know that didn't go as you planned..." she shared "you mean by how I'm an idiot for thinking I could change aunt Julia's mind." Jeremiah shared "I would never say that." Diana told him, putting her hand in his that wasn't on the steering wheel, as she looked back at the road.

Jeremiah looked down at their intertwined hands then back at the road "it's all up to Conrad now and whether or not he can convince dad to dip into his trust. That's gonna go over well." he shared "yeah, I remember how awkward things were between them last summer. But if it's so bad then maybe you and Conrad should talk to him together." Diana shared "no, he's gonna try and do it alone and I'm sick of fighting with him." Jeremiah shared "then don't fight. The only way he's gonna allow this to happen is if you two stand as a united front against him." Diana shared "yeah, I'll give it a shot." Jeremiah told her.

As Diana's phone dinged multiple times, she looked at it and it was the volleyball girls group chat as she smiled "what you got a boyfriend I don't know about?" Jeremiah asked her, as Diana looked to him "girlfriend?" Jeremiah asked her "volleyball girls group chat. I haven't exactly had time for relationships since I became team captain. And this was just the text of all the stuff we need to bring to camp next week." Diana shared, as Jeremiah furrowed his brows "whoa, wait a minute, when did you get promoted to team captain?" he asked.

"Well, on the night of our regional championship Belly was losing her shit and coach decided to bench her and made me team captain where I shockingly was able to bring us back to the point where we won the championship. And since then everyone on the team has been saying I'm the better captain and how excited they are for me to be leading them."  Diana shared "well you did always have that fiery, competitive, sassy spirit." Jeremiah shared "yes but it's not like I took it from some other girl, I took it from Belly." Diana told him, looking back at the road.

"And she..she's been having a really rough time and it's not like me or Steven haven't been having one, it's just the fact that you have to move forward like I knew Susannah even with everything that happened would want me to continue on with my life so I did. Destiny be damned." she shared, and as she did, Jeremiah looked at her, remembering how his mom said that the two of them were each other's destiny as he turned looking back at the road.

Where they had gone to the store and picked up some grocery's before returning back to the beach house, as Jeremiah pulled in and parked next to Conrad's car, the two got out, as they grabbed the groceries from the back "you guys went to the store?" Conrad asked, as Jeremiah and Diana came walking up to him "yes and.." Diana shared, looking to Jeremiah "and we went to see aunt Julia." Jeremiah shared "how did that go?" Conrad asked, as Diana looked to him "exactly as you'd expect." she shared "talk to dad yet?" Jeremiah asked "no." Conrad told him, as Diana turned to Jeremiah, taking his bag "I'm gonna go put the grocery's away." she shared "thanks." Jeremiah told her, as Diana walked around Conrad and headed inside.
