Chapter 8: The Break (2017)
Word Count: 3000-4000
The sunlight streamed through the blinds, casting a warm glow in Y/N and Elizabeth's shared home. It was a beautiful morning in Los Angeles, yet the air felt thick with unspoken tension. Y/N sat at the breakfast table, stirring her coffee absentmindedly while Elizabeth stood by the sink, washing the dishes in silence. They had fallen into a routine, but lately, something felt off.
“Liz, can we talk?” Y/N finally broke the silence, her voice hesitant but firm. She sensed that something significant was brewing beneath the surface.
Elizabeth paused, turning to face her. “Is this about last night? Because I really think we should let it go.”
“No, it’s more than that,” Y/N replied, frustration creeping into her tone. “We need to talk about our future… about kids.”
A pained expression crossed Elizabeth's face. “Y/N, we’ve discussed this before. I’m just not ready to settle down, especially not now with my career taking off. You know how busy I am with Marvel.”
Y/N's heart sank. “I know, but I thought we were on the same page. I thought we both wanted a family someday.”
“Of course I want a family, just… not right now,” Elizabeth replied, her voice trembling slightly. “Things are happening for me, and I can’t be tied down.”
Feeling the distance between them widening, Y/N decided to shift the conversation. “So, what’s the plan for this week? More meetings in LA for the new Marvel movie?”
Elizabeth nodded, grateful for the change in topic. “Yeah, I’ll be flying out again tomorrow. You know how these things go—long hours, lots of pressure. I’ll be back in a few days.”
“Just make sure to call when you land,” Y/N replied, trying to mask her disappointment. The emptiness settled in her chest again as they both returned to their respective tasks.
Days turned into weeks, and Y/N found herself immersed in her soccer training, channeling her emotions into the sport. She threw herself into practice, determined to prove her worth on the field. But each time she scored a goal, a small part of her felt hollow without Elizabeth by her side to celebrate.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth was deep into her work, attending meetings and rehearsing for her next role. She felt exhilarated by the opportunities but haunted by the lingering doubts about her relationship. After a long day of filming, she confided in her friend Natalie during a late-night dinner. “I’m just so torn. I love Y/N, but I can’t shake the feeling that I’m sacrificing my dreams.”
Natalie looked at her with sympathy. “Liz, you can’t ignore your feelings. If you want to have a family someday, you need to be honest with yourself and with her. You both deserve happiness.”
“You’re right, but how do I even begin to have that conversation?” Elizabeth sighed, stirring her wine. “And what if she decides she can’t wait for me?”
As the days passed, the distance between Y/N and Elizabeth grew more pronounced. Despite their attempts to connect through phone calls and texts, something vital felt missing. Y/N often found herself lying awake at night, staring at the ceiling, contemplating the life they had built together.
One night, while lying in bed alone, Y/N picked up her phone and scrolled through her music library. She paused at a song they used to play together, a ballad that resonated with their shared memories. Her heart ached with nostalgia as she began to write her feelings down, pouring her heart into lyrics that reflected her turmoil.
Verse 1:
In the shadows of our love, I stand alone,
Searching for the light, but you’re never home.
We built our dreams on sand, and they slip away,
What do I do when your heart starts to stray?
