Chapter 14: The Great Divide (2020)

One quiet afternoon, Elizabeth found herself standing in front of the Florida house she and Y/N had once shared. The house had been left untouched for years, like a forgotten relic of the life they had once imagined together. It was filled with memories and dreams that she wasn’t sure she was ready to face, yet something had drawn her back.

The air inside the house was thick with nostalgia. Elizabeth wandered through the rooms, brushing her fingers over the furniture they had chosen together, each item now a painful reminder of what had been lost. She wasn’t ready to sell it, even after all this time, because letting go of the house felt like letting go of Y/N completely—and she couldn’t bring herself to do that.

Eventually, Elizabeth found herself standing in front of a room she had avoided for years. It had once been intended as the nursery. She pushed open the door, feeling her heart tighten as she stepped inside. The room was empty now, except for one thing: a bassinet. It sat in the corner, a symbol of the future they had once dreamed of but never realized.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she approached it. She remembered the day they had picked it out together, filled with hope and excitement, ready to start their family. As she knelt beside it, something caught her eye—an envelope, hidden beneath the bassinet.

Her breath hitched in her throat as she recognized the handwriting on the front: Y/N’s.

With trembling hands, Elizabeth opened the envelope, revealing a letter she hadn’t seen in years. As she unfolded the paper, her eyes blurred with tears, and she began to read:

"Liz, I can’t wait for the day when we finally have our family. I can see us rocking our baby to sleep in this bassinet, laughing together as we navigate parenthood. I love you more than words can say, and I know we’ll make this dream a reality."

The words hit her like a tidal wave. She had forgotten about the letter, written during a time when they had believed the world was theirs to shape together. Elizabeth collapsed to the floor, clutching the letter to her chest, her body trembling with sobs. It was as if the weight of all the years they had been apart suddenly came crashing down on her.

She had tried to move on. She had built a new life with Robbie, a man who loved her, but something had always been missing. They had talked about children, but it had never felt the same as it had with Y/N. There had been a spark in her and Y/N’s dreams of starting a family, a sense of certainty that it was what they were meant to do. But with Robbie, that same excitement never materialized.

Elizabeth stared at the letter, the pain of the past mixing with the confusion of the present. She had buried these feelings for so long, but now, sitting in this house surrounded by the echoes of her life with Y/N, she realized that she had never truly moved on. No matter how much she had tried to convince herself otherwise, a part of her heart had always been stuck in this place, with Y/N.

She stood up slowly, wiping her tears, still holding the letter. The house was silent, but her mind was filled with memories—of Y/N’s laughter, of the life they had once dreamed of building together. It was all still here, tucked away in the corners of this house, and in the corners of her heart.

Elizabeth knew, in that moment, that she couldn’t keep running from the past. She had to confront it. Because no matter how hard she tried to build a new life, a part of her heart would always be with Y/N—and maybe, just maybe, it was time to face that truth.
