Chapter 25: New Beginnings, Old Memories

The final whistle was fast approaching at Red Bull Arena, where Gotham FC faced Seattle Reign FC for the league title. The crowd was electric, but the tension was palpable after Gotham’s goalkeeper, M. Haught, received a red card early in the first half. Gotham had been thrown into a difficult situation, with Seattle already 2-0 up by the 50th minute.

Y/N had been battling hard all game, but when she went in for a tackle, Seattle’s midfielder caught her off guard. The impact sent her crashing to the ground. The stadium fell silent.

Dua was walking into the stadium at that exact moment, holding her breath as she watched the tackle unfold from the tunnel. Her hands instinctively clenched the railing, her eyes locked on Y/N as she lay on the field, unmoving.

“God, not again…” Dua whispered, her stomach in knots as she rushed down toward the edge of the pitch. Memories of Y/N's past injuries flooded her mind. The uncertainty always scared her, no matter how many times she'd seen Y/N fall and get back up.

In the days leading up to the final, they had a light-hearted conversation about it while lounging in bed.

“You know I hate watching you get hurt, right?” Dua had said, tracing her finger along Y/N’s arm.

Y/N had chuckled softly, turning to face her. “I know, babe. But you know I always bounce back.”

Dua frowned, her voice laced with worry. “It still freaks me out every time. What if one day you don’t?”

Y/N kissed her on the forehead. “Okay, how about this? From now on, every time I go down, I’ll give you a thumbs up. That way, you’ll know I’m okay. Just a little knock. Deal?”

Dua smiled weakly. “Deal. But you better keep that promise, or I’m running out onto the pitch.”

Back in the present, Dua was on the edge of her seat, watching as medical staff surrounded Y/N. The match felt irrelevant now. It was only when Y/N, still lying on the ground, slowly raised her arm and gave a big thumbs-up to the crowd that Dua’s tense posture relaxed. A relieved smile broke across her face.

“That’s my girl,” Dua whispered to herself, a tear of relief escaping her eye.

Y/N got to her feet, shaking off the knock. The roar of the crowd grew louder as she jogged to rejoin her team. The referee blew the whistle to resume play, and something lit up inside her. With renewed energy, Y/N went on the attack, determined to turn the game around.

And she did.

By the time the final whistle blew, Y/N had singlehandedly scored four goals, leading Gotham FC to an incredible 4-2 comeback victory. The stadium erupted, and her teammates swarmed her, celebrating their hard-fought win. The trophy lights flashed, champagne popped, and the Gotham squad raised the league title.

But as Y/N held the trophy high, all she could think about was one thing.

Dua.

Before she knew it, Dua was running onto the pitch, Blue trailing behind. Y/N barely had time to react before Dua jumped into her arms, wrapping her legs around her waist and planting a kiss on her lips. The cameras caught the moment in perfect detail—Y/N and Dua, laughing and embracing amid the chaos. The moment went viral within minutes, a symbol of love and triumph.

Later that night, in the team locker room, Y/N sat surrounded by her teammates, a glass of champagne in her hand.

“To Gotham FC,” she said, raising her glass. “Thank you for giving me an unforgettable season. I’ll never forget this, but now it’s time for me to return to Barcelona and give everything I have there too.”
