The Incident: Book 6, Part 7.

W/ Jace And Kennon

Setting: inside the old, empty and abandoned gas station.. Now the morning sun beaming bright through the glass windows.

No One's POV/3rd person:

Jace was first to wake up, sitting upright, looking to the left of her, Kennon still fast asleep. She jokingly rolls her eyes and lays back down next to him. "Hey, knucklehead. Pro tip: wake up. We're still in the middle of a life-threatening apocalypse, you know." Jace Nudges him with her arm as he stirs awake. "Ugh..." Kennon let out a big yawn. "What time is it?" Kennon asks, and Jace sighs. She looked at the sun, and knew it was around 7 in the morning. It was one of the many things her not-so-beloved father had taught her when she was younger. He taught her survival and wilderness skills so she was never dependent on modern-day things like technology. "Around eight or seven." She bluntly replies as she sighs, and Kennon's eyes went wide for a second. "You seriously knew the time without a watch or a phone?" Kennon sure was awake now as he sat up and grabbed her by the shoulders. Jace didn't think much of it until it dawned on her. She knew if he had done that 5 months ago when they were still strangers, she would've ripped his arms right off his body. That just showed how dependent and fond they had grown of each other. Well, more of a big step forward for Jace more than Kennon. She shook off her shock before shrugging. "I swear, Jace. you gotta teach me stuff like this one day." Kennon says, determination and excitement in his eyes, the look as if he was a 5 year old all over again. Jace couldn't help but smile slightly, but it started to fade when Kennon asked the question she hoped would have never come up. "Who taught you all of this? It's obvious you didn't learn all of this on your own." Kennon asks curiously and Jace sighs. "My... uhh... my dad." Jace tries to show not so much emotion, hoping Kennon wouldn't ask anything else. But with her luck, it didn't seem to go her way so much. "Your dad must be awesome then. Maybe like a really really, really famous kind of guy, yeah? Like maybe he had the bucks before this happened! Am I getting close?" Kennon says, and Jace sighs, melancholy washing over. "But I guess I'll Teach you some survival skills." Jace says, eyes drifting to the ground. Her heart almost nearly exploded as Kennon grabbed her face and kissed her. It was short and tender but still an affectionate one. Jace only stared wide eyed into space, blush brushing her cheeks as her face grew more flustered. "Oh- Uh, sorry. I sort of got so excited I didn't know what else to do." Kennon flexed his hand nervously, as he glanced at Jace up and down. "I guess I should've... gone for a hug- you know?" kennon says, hoping that he could snap her out of it. But Jace only sighed, expression now solemn. "You asked about my dad." Jace says, and Kennon nods as confusion only grew on his face but he decided to go with it. "And I know your perspective about me will change really soon after this. And I don't blame you. I'd hate to find out this way too." Jace says, shifting uneasily. "My father isn't the best man." Jace says, and Kennon slowly started to get impatient but continued to listen. Jace took a breath and sighed. She sure was sighing a lot. "But... I guess what I'm trying to get at is..." Jace says. "My dad is...." It felt like an eternity to get the words out. "My Dad Is Enzo."

Kennon's whole world shattered. He stood up and glanced at Jace in confusion and shock. "Your dad is WHO?" Kennon says, his Voice slightly raising an octave...or two.. Jace shamefully repeated herself. "By your reaction I assume you know who he is. But-... yeah. My father is Enzo." Jace says, and he clenches his Jaw. "OF COURSE I KNOW WHO HE IS! HE'S THE PERSON WHO SHOT ME, KILLED SGT. RUDO'S FRIEND, HE'S A PSYCHOPATHIC MURDERER WHO HAS NO SELF-RESTRAINT! AND YOU DECIDE TO JUST HIDE THAT FROM ME?!" Kennon says. Jace glances up at him, shocked by his reaction. He could tell. That didn't stop him from being extremely livid with her. "Kennon, Please- Just try to understand-" Jace says. "NO! I'M NOT GOING TO UNDERSTAND OR LISTEN TO YOU! NOT ANYMORE!" he yells, And suddenly Jace goes wide-eyed. "KENNON MOVE!" Jace yelled.. Apparently she saw someone approach behind kennon, and immediately he was put in a chokehold. The attacker was unidentifiable, but Jace had thrown a glass bottle at the attackers head, causing them to let go of kennon and stumble back in surprise, momentarily stunned. And Jace takes this as a chance to flee, grabbing kennon and running for cover. They had hid behind the cashier register section, with kennon slightly dazed and lost, While Jace frantically looked for something to defend themselves with. There was a growl not too far away from them. Crap. Jace thought. All the ruckus could have drawn attention to themselves, and now they probably had the attacker and the capybara on their tails now. Could their situation get any worse? Jace immediately tensed up as she heard the attacker speaking. "Where did they go?!" The attacker yelled, and there was a gruff snort, followed by the heavy thud of the sound of footsteps anyone could recognize. Capybara footsteps. The possibility of the capybara being massive wasn't exactly far-fetched... unfortunately. Jace really didn't know who she should worry about more. The attacker or the capybara itself. Both of them could be extremely dangerous, and kennon or herself were not necessarily armed at this moment. The sound of the attacker's struggle against the capybara was heard, with the silencer of a gun silently going off, as the capybara roared and tackled the attacker. "WHAT?! I- GET OFF OF ME!" the attacker screamed, and Jace took this as an opportunity to leave. And with kennon, who was now more aware but still completely freaked out. Jace didn't blame him. And with that, she took off, out of the gas station, while their attacker was left to fend for theirself against the capybara. As they ran away as far and fast as they could, Jace felt a twinge of annoyance as she thought: 'damn it, why can't we catch a break?'
