Nightmare had truly thought he had been cursed to 'live interesting times' as he felt nothing else could describe just how strange his entire life was. He wasn't sure when it exactly went downhill, as even when his father stupidly tried to steal from the Tree of Feelings he wasn't particularly upset to be chosen as a Guardian in response as 'punishment' for his family's attempted theft of something sacred.
Being stripped of his name, a chance of a normal life hadn't even affected him that badly in his opinion, unsure he had even processed that he and Dream were practically immortal and was not looking forward to the day when it would click in his mind.
Sure it hadn't been his ideal or something he ever dreamed of but the temple had been pretty much all he knew since a young age and he had liked Dream even back then, so it had felt oddly comforting to not be alone in that sort of situation. He wouldn't even count Dream eating the apples in some bid to have power to 'spread Positivity' the turning point either although day by day was growing suspicious if that was even the true reason and felt it started not long after they were chosen for their 'sacred' duty.
He thought it was around the time when Dream gained his new idols, unsure what exactly happened the one day he had been out but when he came back it looked like a switch had been turned on with Dream's personality suddenly dialed up by 100. It had been a slow change but looking back he realised he missed many signs which were embarrassingly obvious in hindsight.
He wondered if things would have changed if he tried to reach out more, if he spent more time showing interest in Dream''s 'idols' and make them see what they were doing was extreme but it was far too late for that....which somehow led him into this situation.
