Toni rushed through the halls of the hospital as she looked for the right room. When she got the call from Janet's mother that she had to rush Janet to the hospital, she dropped everything. "Okay...213,214...yes." She entered the room. "Baby."
"Toni." Janet stretched her arms out and Toni hugged her. She kissed her forehead and rubbed her head.
"Is everything okay? Is the baby okay?"
"Everything's okay."
"Are you in labor? Do I need to get the things from the house? Oh my god, I have to put the rest of the stuff together."
"Baby, calm down. I'm not in labor. I just had a few pains." Toni let out a relieved breath.
"Okay, good. Then what was wrong?"
"I can answer that." The doctor came in with the chart.
"Doctor, is the baby okay?"
"The baby is fine. However, Mrs. Braxton I am going to have to put you on bed rest."
"What?"
"Your blood pressure is too high." Janet immediately got scared.
"Am I hurting my baby? Did I do something?" She felt tears come to her eyes. Toni immediately comforted her.
"Shh, don't cry. Sometimes blood pressure rises due to stress, I could've stressed you out and not know it. This is why I didn't want you to do all the stuff for me." They were both starting to cry. The doctor was immediately shocked.
"No, I messed up. I'm sorry."
"No. No. Nobody messed up." The doctor spoke up. "Sometimes blood pressures can get high. Just stay off your feet, okay." Janet nodded. The doctor handed them both some tissue and they wiped their faces.
"Doctor, you can just tell me what's going on." said Katherine.
"Okay, come out into the hall." They stepped out of the room. "Umm..are they..."
"They're both just like that. They freaked out when she got pregnant, they're newly weds and don't want to mess up. So everything is a big deal for them."
"Wow, okay. I've just never seen the paternal parent begin to cry like that."
"Like I said,...." Katherine chuckled. "...everything's a big deal. Toni doesn't want to hurt Janet, Janet doesn't want to hurt Toni and they both are terrified of hurting the baby, but they're very sweet."
"I can tell. The eagerness to know how to fix the situation is something I rarely see." He looked at the chart. "So, Janet's blood pressure is high due to her diet. She hasn't been eating enough of the right stuff. She also needs to rest. Her heart rate is also a little high as well. We've been monitoring that as well."
"Okay."
"Just keep her in the bed until it's time for the baby to come."
"Does she have to switch a hospital birth now?"
"No, she can still have a home birth, but I suggest only necessary people be with her. If she gets too stress during labor, it can cause her delivery to be harder."
"Got it. We already have everything set up for privacy."
"Good, and I will suggest getting a blood pressure machine to monitor her during labor. Just to be safe."
"Of course. Thank you doctor."
"You're welcome." He wrote something down and handed it to her. "Here is my recommendation for a home blood pressure kit." He handed her a piece of paper.
