The soft hum of the piano started just as the rain tapped gently on the café's windows. Leehan sat by the corner, his notebook open, a pen resting between his fingers. The familiar warmth of the place surrounded him—the scent of fresh coffee, the quiet murmurs of conversation—but his focus drifted to the piano at the far end of the room.
That's where Taesan sat, his back straight, fingers gliding across the keys. The first few notes were soft, tentative, but deliberate. Then his voice joined the melody.
"I don't know you..."
Leehan's head turned sharply. The words felt like a confession, raw and exposed, breaking through the dull hum of the café. Taesan's gaze flickered up briefly, and their eyes met. Leehan froze, his breath catching as the music wove around him, pulling him in.
"But I want you..."
Taesan's voice deepened, the vulnerability in his tone stirring something in Leehan. He gripped his pen tightly, the weight of the lyrics pressing against his chest. Outside, the rain blurred the world beyond the window, but in here, everything felt sharper—clearer.
"All the more for that..."
Leehan's heart pounded as he looked back down at his notebook. His thoughts were a jumble, scattered and frantic. Was it coincidence? Or was this song meant for him?
Taesan's fingers moved effortlessly, his voice rising as the piano swelled with emotion.
"Words fall through me, and always fool me..."
Leehan's pen slipped from his grasp, clattering softly onto the table. His hand trembled as he stared down at the page, blank except for the tiny doodles he'd made while procrastinating. The lyrics were speaking to him in ways he didn't understand—or maybe didn't want to admit.
"And I can't react..."
Leehan dared to look up again, his eyes locking onto Taesan's. This time, Taesan didn't look away. There was something unspoken in his gaze—an invitation, a plea.
The café fell silent except for the music. Every soul in the room seemed captivated, but Leehan felt as though he were the only one listening.
"Take this sinking boat and point it home..."
Taesan's voice cracked slightly on the high note, but the imperfection made it feel even more real. Leehan's chest tightened. He couldn't tear his gaze away now, even if he wanted to.
"We've still got time..."
The song reached its peak, the piano crashing in waves of emotion. Taesan's expression softened, his lips parting as the last notes lingered in the air.
The applause came like a sudden storm, jolting Leehan out of his trance. He blinked, realizing the song had ended. But Taesan wasn't done. Standing, he made his way across the room, weaving through tables until he was standing in front of Leehan.
"You didn't finish your tea," Taesan said, his voice low and teasing.
Leehan looked down at the untouched cup in front of him, the steam long since faded. "I got distracted," he admitted, his voice barely audible.
"By the rain?" Taesan asked, tilting his head playfully.
Leehan shook his head, a shy smile tugging at his lips. "By the music."
Taesan's lips quirked upward. "Good distraction, I hope?"
"The best," Leehan replied, his cheeks flushing.
"Raise your hopeful voice..."
The words echoed in Leehan's mind, even though the song had ended. Taesan took the seat across from him, resting his arms on the table.
"You inspire it, you know," Taesan said softly.
Leehan's heart skipped a beat. "What?"
"The music." Taesan's gaze didn't waver. "It's all because of you."
"You have suffered enough..."
Leehan swallowed hard, his throat dry. He wanted to say something—anything—but the lump in his throat made it impossible.
Taesan's hand slid across the table, his fingers brushing against Leehan's. The touch was light, tentative, but it sent a shiver down Leehan's spine.
"And warred with yourself..."
The rain outside turned into a downpour, the streaks on the window growing thicker. Inside, the world felt suspended, as though nothing else mattered but the two of them.
Leehan finally found his voice. "Why me?" he asked, his words trembling.
Taesan smiled, his eyes softening. "Because you make me want to fall."
"It's time that you won..."
Leehan's heart surged, the weight of Taesan's words settling over him like a warm blanket. He turned his hand, his fingers intertwining with Taesan's.
"I think..." Leehan began, his voice barely above a whisper, "I'm already falling."
Taesan's smile widened, his grip on Leehan's hand tightening just slightly.
And as the rain poured outside, the lyrics of the song echoed in their minds, a melody they would carry with them forever.
