I was doing better alone
But when you said hello
I knew that was the end of it all
I should've stayed at home
'Cause now there ain't no letting you go
Am I falling in love with the one that could break my heart?
If someone had told Han Taesan three months ago that he'd be the one hiding behind vending machines and dodging eye contact like a middle schooler with a crush, he would've laughed in their face.
But here he was.
Back pressed against cold metal. Heart pounding like it wanted to leap out of his chest. Because Kim Leehan had just walked around the corner.
"Taesan, are you hiding right now?"
Jaehyun's voice rang out, far too loud for the tension hanging in the air. Woonhak peeked around the machine with a snort, eyebrows raised like he'd just caught Santa at a gas station.
"That's rich coming from the guy who used to flirt with waiters just for fun," Woonhak added.
Taesan groaned and yanked his hoodie further over his head. "I'm not hiding. I'm..." He glanced around, mind scrambling. "Choosing to exist in the shade."
"Bro," Jaehyun said, crossing his arms. "You've been acting weird ever since Leehan said your name like a Disney prince. What did he even do? Wink?"
"He said hello," Woonhak deadpanned. "And Taesan combusted."
"Internally!" Jaehyun added. "Which is worse. That's emotional damage."
Taesan dragged a hand over his face. "Why do I even hang out with you two?"
"Because we know your deepest, darkest secret," Woonhak sing-songed.
"I don't have one."
"You like him."
The words struck like lightning.
The problem wasn't that Taesan liked Leehan.
It was that Leehan knew.
And worse—he used it.
Leehan was chaos in human form. Sunshine laced with mischief. He was that warmth on a winter morning, and the electric shock from static right after. He laughed too easily, hugged too freely, and never let Taesan breathe.
"Why are you always scowling?" Leehan had asked once, leaning across the lunch table, chin resting in his palm.
"I'm not scowling," Taesan mumbled.
"You look like someone stole your last french fry." Leehan had tilted his head, eyes glittering. "Want me to make it better?"
Taesan had choked. On air. And that was the beginning of the end.
From then on, Leehan made it worse. Every day.
He dragged out Taesan's name like he was savoring dessert.
"Tae~saaan," he'd sing, voice sweet and low, until Taesan had to grind his teeth just to stay upright.
He'd lean over during lunch, fingers brushing Taesan's as he reached for water, whispering, "Can you pass that?" like he was telling a secret.
He teased without mercy. But somehow, he did it all with warmth. And Taesan?
Taesan was unraveling.
He'd always been the one who left first. Before anyone could get close enough to leave a scar. But Leehan hadn't forced his way in.
He'd laughed his way in. Stayed. Sat too close. Smiled too often. And Taesan didn't know how to stop falling.
It was after school when Leehan dragged him to the rooftop.
"Up," he said, grabbing Taesan's wrist and tugging.
"Why?"
"Because I want to."
The wind up there was soft. The kind that ruffled your hair and carried secrets away. Leehan plopped down on the concrete like it was a picnic blanket, legs crossed, looking smug.
"I have a very serious question," he said.
Taesan narrowed his eyes. "What?"
"Is it true you've been hiding behind the vending machine to avoid me?"
Taesan blinked. "I—no—who told you—?"
"Woonhak. He sent me pictures."
"Oh my god..."
"I think it's adorable," Leehan said, eyes crinkling. "You, Mr. Stoic, blushing because I said your name."
"I wasn't blushing," Taesan muttered.
"You totally were," Leehan whispered, sliding closer. "And you do every time I say—" He leaned in, breath brushing Taesan's ear.
"Taesan."
Taesan's breath caught.
"You're dangerous," he whispered.
Leehan hummed. "And you like danger, don't you?"
"I was doing fine before you," Taesan said. The words came out lower than he intended. Honest. Exposed. "Didn't have to care. Didn't have to be scared."
The grin on Leehan's face softened. A flicker of something gentler crept in.
"But you do now," he said.
Taesan looked down at his hands.
"Yeah. And it terrifies me."
Leehan leaned back on his hands, staring up at the sky.
"You know what terrifies me?"
"What?"
"That I might love someone who thinks that's a bad thing."
Taesan froze.
Slowly, he turned.
Leehan was already watching him, eyes soft.
"You fall like it's a trap," he said. "Like you're going to hit the ground and break into pieces. But what if I'm here to catch you?"
Something cracked open inside Taesan.
His voice trembled. "Centre of attention," he murmured. "You know you can get whatever you want from me... whenever you want it."
Leehan blinked, startled—but didn't interrupt.
Taesan's voice was quiet, but heavy with everything he'd been holding in. "It's you in my reflection. I'm afraid of all the things it could do to me... if I would've known it, baby..."
Leehan inhaled slowly, eyes wide and full of something fierce and vulnerable all at once. "But you know now."
Taesan nodded.
"I do."
"I should've stayed at home."
Leehan's smile widened, bright and impossibly warm.
"But you didn't."
He leaned in, forehead nearly brushing Taesan's.
"And now there ain't no letting me go.
"Is that a promise or a threat?" Taesan asked, his voice low, eyes locked on Leehan's lips.
Leehan's smile turned slow, teasing. "Whichever gets you to kiss me first."
Without hesitation, Taesan closed the space between them.
Their lips met — soft, electric, a spark that made everything else disappear.
When they finally pulled apart, Taesan's heart was pounding harder than ever.
And just like that, Taesan knew:
He was falling in love with the one who could break his heart.
