Chapter 32 - Identity Problem

David paced the apartment as he waited for Henry to arrive, his thoughts a tangle of nerves and anticipation. Legosi was out for the day, apparently the noodle shop needed him an hour earlier than usual, which left David alone with his spiraling thoughts. He didn't know why he felt so tense. Henry's visits were rare, being in witness protection, but something about this one felt... loaded. Maybe it was guilt. A knock at the door snapped him out of his reverie. David quickly opened it to find his adoptive father standing there with his usual air of composed authority.

"Dad!"

"David!"

The two greet each other and hug. David then allows Henry to step inside the apartment, who scans the living space, looking very pleased with how tidy everything was.

"So this is your shared domain with that wolf. Cozy, I suppose. You've made it a real home."

Henry just figures David and Legosi are roommates to help split the rent, thinking Legosi graduated and moved in with David to save money. The two of them sat at the dining table, David prepared them both tea, and they would catch up. However, at one point in their conversation, David would think about his next patrol tonight, spacing out, and Henry notices

"Are you okay, David? You seem restless."

David would snap up, realizing he forgot Henry was here

"Oh, I've been fine. Just busy, you know, figuring things out. I'm working as a courier now, though they have me delivering packages at night."

Henry would raise an eyebrow. He knew David got a job, but working as a night courier is odd, as that's usually reserved for nocturnal animals.

"Is that all? A newer sleep schedule shouldn't be the root cause of this distress."

Henry then sets his tea aside and leans forward, passively pressing David to admit what's truly on his mind. It was way too soon to tell any family you're a vigilante the whole city is talking about. David needed to think on his feet, but there was something else he needed to tell Henry.

"Uh... well... I uh... I'm dating someone."

Henry's ears then perk up, interested in the sudden change of topic. Then David would mention

"... have been for a year."

It worried Henry that he wasn't told for this long, but he still paid close attention.

"Oh. Hm. And you didn't think to mention this before?"

David rubs his neck out of embarrassment, it was often because he would forget, then other times because Legosi is a wolf.

"Um... I'm dating Legosi."
Henry leaned back, exhaling softly. For a moment, silence hung between them, the kind that made David's nerves itch. Then, slowly, his ears flicked, and his lips curled into a wry smile.
"A year. And you never thought to mention that your carnivorous best friend was also your boyfriend?"

David stiffened up, blushing because Henry's taking the information so well

"You never asked!"

Henry chuckles at David's response, satisfied that this is what David has been holding back from telling him.

"Well, if it was that or you were just worried how I would feel if you were dating a carnivore, I have no problem with it. If you've been dating for a year, I trust the two of you must really love each other."

David couldn't help but feel better with himself after telling Henry about him and Legosi. It wasn't what was really on his mind, but it's nice he could finally get that off his chest.
