Chapter 23 - Searching for Answers

The very next morning bothered David very much, he didn't think he'd still be thinking about today soon after breakfast. He's lost on why today of all days is having his mental siren going off. David was then on his way to his math class, he felt worse than before, like he was approaching a ghost. Then when David enters class and takes his seat, he's drawn to look to the left of him, but there's no one there. The last time he looks to the left, David focuses hard on that spot, and he starts seeing bright white spots appear in the seat next to him. David was mesmerized, but his focus was broken when his teacher called out

"Mr. David, are you with us?" David snaps his head forward immediately, stammering for being unsure how long he's been acting this way

"Oh, u-um, yes! I'm sorry!" David calmly fixes his attention to the board just as the teacher resumed his teaching. Although he forced forward at the board, David's eyes still glanced over at the seat. A sudden recollection hits the thoughts of David as he thinks to himself

"There was an alpaca here..." David felt stressed out the rest of the class, due to the fact he thought he remembered everything. David could barely eat lunch without thinking about his memory, Legosi notices David staring intensely down at his tray. Legosi figures he could talk to David about it privately once his classes were over. It affected David a lot, he even shaped his mashed potatoes into the figure he saw.

[Later that afternoon]

That same stare still engulfed David's face as he was sitting in the library with Legosi sitting across from him. Legosi had invited David to study with him, but Legosi knows David isn't studying the book he's reading and says

"David, do you have something on your mind?" David blinks a few times to reset his face and looks up at Legosi

"Huh? No, why? Is something wrong?" Legosi gives a confused look, thinking David would know if there was something wrong

"Well, you've had a very serious look in your eye most of the day, and I've been watching you 'study' and not once have you moved your eyes. You've just been moving pages the whole time." David looks back down, but he was ashamed he didn't let Legosi know of his thoughts in the first place

"I'm sorry. Something is wrong. I've been feeling this way all night in my sleep." Legosi soon felt concern as he isn't sure if it has something to do with him, but he's really hoping it isn't. Just then David says

"I feel like someone died today." Legosi instantly knows who David was talking about and develops a sorry face when he has to inform David

"Someone *did* die today. Last year." David was shocked to know his feeling was right, as much as he didn't want it to be. His shock soon turned to disbelief, he thought he remembered everything, but the fact that his memory still had holes bothered him greatly. Legosi continues

"I understand that you probably don't remember, and I'm very sorry you don't, but who you're trying to remember was an Alpaca named Tem. He was in your math class and he was a member in the drama club." It makes David feel terrible to learn that someone died and the fact he feels terrible helps him indicate he should be close to Tem somehow.

"How did Tem die?" Legosi knows once he brings up Tem's cause of death, David will want to investigate. However, he would never lie to David

"He was murdered... by a carnivore. They never found the killer." David's eyes widen with ire, which was just what Legosi worried about. David gets a headache from trying to remember, he rubs his head trying to soothe it as he says

"I can't believe this...!" David suddenly grows very passionate and grabs Legosi by the collar and exclaims

"We have to find out who did it!" Legosi wasn't expecting this behavior to be from David and so sudden. Before Legosi could say a word, David lets go of his collar, realizing how much of a scene he's making
