Chapter 22 - Returning

A new year has arrived, it is the third year of school for David, he's now a senior and graduating this year. David had a summer that was very memorable, however not just because he spent it with Legosi or Henry at the mountain facility, more than just those two things happened. David has made some personal discoveries, such as being put in a pool full of ice, David can survive having his body temperature being lowered to 57°F (or 13.89°C) and is better than most animals without fur. It's almost deadly for David, but it was his idea to test himself and his limits if he's going to try out being a vigilante after school is over with. It's a secret that David keeps to himself, if there are animals as dangerous as the Shishigumi, he wants to be prepared. Other than giving himself gains, David contacted the unknown "M" character again and has been for the few weeks he's been at the facility and summer school. David discovered a lot more from M than he thought he would, such as finding out M is an elephant therapist, M being unable to taste, and his favorite color is green. Their most recent text chat went as such

"Hey, M! Happy Sunday!"

"Hello, D! How have you been?"

"Eh, could be better, just a lot on my mind recently."

"Oh yeah? What's up?"

"Just been thinking about people I've lost. Family and such, you know?"

"Oh, I understand completely. You know, I may be an elephant therapist, but a therapist nonetheless. Why don't you drop by my office sometime this week?"

"That sounds like a good idea! It'd even give us a chance to meet in person!"

Melon proceeds to give the address to his office and they say their goodbyes. David doesn't know when he'll visit M this week, but it'll be eventually. Now in present day, the school has already started for a couple days, and David is sitting by some stairs with Legosi and Haru while eating an energy bar. They're here to talk by Haru's request, the boys think it's to catch up. After greeting each other and talking about each other's summers, Haru says

"... So, on my way here, I bumped into an elephant student and fell over. I could actually feel the tremors of the elephant's stomping. This entire building is deteriorating." David nods in agreement and pretends to be listening, he's caught up in his own thoughts, but Legosi continues listening

"I bet the mouse family has it rough here." Legosi, being the one paying attention, helps correct Haru

"Well, the school has passages near the ceiling for mice." Haru seemed surprised

"Oh really?" It was then that Haru notices David spacing out and nudges him as she jokingly says "Hey, Earth to David." Just after this, David snaps out of his thoughts and says

"Huh? Oh! Sorry!" Haru giggles from David's panicked reaction

"It's fine, I guess I have been talking pretty long." David shook his head hurriedly, not intending to be rude

"No no! You were fine! I was just caught in my head, we could keep talking." Haru tilted her head in a curious way when she asks

"Like what?" Both David and Legosi both stare forward in thought for a new topic. It took almost a minute, made Haru question if they were both distracted, but then Legosi returns his attention to Haru as he says

"Why did you pick here to meet? Is it because no one uses these stairs?" David soon pay attention as well, making sure he's not being unintentionally rude this time. Haru shrugs as she answers Legosi

"Yeah. It's a good spot, mainly because uh..." David and Legosi were curious where Haru was going with this, unsure why a set of stairs is the prime location for meet ups, at least until Haru continues
